I'm newly banded. Still on "mushies", but on my way to solids. I have heard about foods "getting stuck"....my question is how do you know when it's "stuck" and what seems to be the consensus on the things that get that way? Thank you guys!

I pray you never get stuck but you will know when you do. For me the best description is "a Brillo pad being rubbed up and down your throat". Lately I cough until I throw up. It's a horrible feeling. CHEW CHEW CHEW

You will feel a lump in your chest the size of a golfball and you may have saliva(slime) bubble up your esophogus causing you to spit it out. The lump in your chest will feel like a lot of pressure and some mild to severe pain. You have food stuck in your pouch and your stomach is trying to massage the food through your stoma(band opening). Eating more will only cause more pain and could cause the food to come right back up. Do not try to drink it through. That will only make it worse.

Stand up if you are able and walk around. It may take 5-45 minutes to pass through.

Foods likely to cause it.... soft bread, dry meats, scrambled eggs in too big of bites, anything not properly chewed to mush! Just take your time, tiny bites and chew, chew, chew. Slime is the sure sign, but you will probably cough or feel the golf ball in your chest first.

Like the others have said, you'll know when you get stuck lol! For me it hasn't been too terrible, but it's definitely not a comfortable feeling. To me, it feels similar to when you try to swallow a chewy piece of meet that is too big or anything that is too big, except its more intense when you have the band. I've never experienced a stuck episode so bad to have thrown up or anything so I hope I never will ;)

Thank you guys so much for the information! I hope I never experience it, but at least now I will know what to look for!

When you're stuck you'll know it!!

And in time, you'll be able to know what foods/how much/how fast you can eat without getting stuck it's a learning process.

Its an awful feeling but it DOES pass. Sometimes, if i feel wretched to the point that I can't manage anymore, i'll drink a lot and when the Water reaches the top of my throat it makes me throw up. I don't recommend this unless your literally in an AWFUL situation

Back in August and September, the cherries were piled up at the grocery store. I love em. I bought a few lbs of them and me and the wife enjoyed them. But I always had this fear of swallowing a pit. That pit is probably just slightly too big to pass through my stoma. I never swallowed one but I can see how that would be a real problem? I would imagine I'd have to have a complete unfill to allow it to pass?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
