Moment of weakness...banded 12/31/12

Recommended Posts

I dont know what came over me today! i have been so full and this is day 4 post op. i am still on liquids. i am not even to full liquids for 2 more days. about 30 mintues ago i got REALLY hungry out of nowhere. I thought I would make some potato Soup and just drink half a cup of the liquid just this once. 5 minutes later the whole bowl of cream of potato soup was gone!!! I don't feel any different! I am wondering if I messed up my band? how long does it take to get sick/be able to tell if something got stuck??? I have done perfect and can't believe i did this! its kind of funny actually...but at the same time scary. I know a band isnt going to change me overnight and I guess this just showed me that.

Well... if it did something to your band you would probably know it. You are supposed to be on liquids to heal and you could be swollen so much that it would not let solids down (if you consider potato Soup a solid) and cause you to vomit. YOU do not want that to happen at this point. At this stage in the game a slip could happen quite easily until that band is seated in place and the swelling has gone down.

My guess is you are ok... but stick to liquids. Strain that soup and throw away the solids before you even take a sip.

Congrats and good luck!

Also, keep in mind that just because you have a band now that doesn't mean you have instant restriction. There are some lucky few who get restriction right away without any fills. You're healing right now so you could be getting a false sense of restriction by the swelling. I thought I had restriction until after week 4 then I was able to eat just like before I had the surgery and I was quite bummed out by that. It took quite awhile and a number of fills to get proper restriction.

Until that happens it is unfortunately all on you to make the right choices.

There's no saline in your band so it's wide open just for the reason that you need to heal and may make a mistake like this. Liquids or slider foods as we call them, just flow right through to your lower stomach so no harm no foul. I'm very close to my green zone right now and I could do the same with no problem.

Don't beat yourself up over little slips like this. It will happen again, just do not do it with solids before you heal. That could be disasterous.

It could have been much worse, you could have eaten actual solids.

BUT - if you want to succeed with your band, then you need to understand and follow your medical team's rules. They are there for a reason. Some people follow rules just because they are rules, other people need to know why the rules exist. Whichever type you are, figure it out and work with it.

You can do this!

Don't feel bad. I did same thing and worried. I learn from doing things not by what others say I need to do. I listen to what my dr says but sometimes I just have to test the waters. We all learn from doing!! Good luck u can do this!!

I begged my son to make egg drop Soup with the chicken bullion. Clears are tough. Moved to fulls yesterday and they are much better.

You're fine, you haven't messed your band up. As you see in these forums there are a million different rules for each of us and we are all fine. I was only on clears for the first day then liquids after that, as long as your liquids contain no lumps you're ok. My instructions were on liquid phase anything that can go into a blender and turned to liquid is fine. My liquids included smoothies ( which I made) and creamed Soups. I'm six months out have lost over 80 pounds and have no issues with my band, no slip etc and I also started on solids at three weeks.

You won't feel restriction till you start getting fills, you maybe one of the lucky ones and only need a few or you may need many to get to greenzone.

You'll also hear no drinking with meals, I'm one of the ones that is allowed to drink with meals and do so when I need too and again I'm fine.

The first few months are hard but it does get easier and you're right the changes we need to make are gradual and will happen with patience and persistence.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
