Hairloss Question

Recommended Posts

So I've read a lot of posts about people losing their hair or having it thin out after being banded. Would you recommend starting Biotin before the surgery maybe to help prevent a lot of Hair loss? I'm going to talk to my doctor about it, but I'm curious to know what you all think.

Thank you :)

Hair loss is caused by losing the fat that holds your hair in, so I was told that 1 pat of butter per day would help keep your hair from falling out. You can mix it in your eggs when cooking them. Now if you lose a lot of weight at one time you may need additional help to keep it in. You need some fat in your diet, but not too much.

Actually, any surgery can lead to hair loss. It's the drugs they pump into you during and after surgery, specifically anesthetic. This is why so many band patients lose hair 3-6 months after surgery,

I would start Biotin a month before surgery to try to lessen the effects.

So weird all the conflicting theories on hairloss. I was told it is due to the loss of Protein you experience after surgery...since most people can't get all their Protein in.

I started taking Biotin about a month ago and I have no idea when I might be banded...on the six month supervised diet right now.

I will caution you on the Biotin, it can cause breakouts...so you'll want to start on the lowest dosage you can find. I'm currently on 750 ml...found it on Amazon.< /p>

Oh wow! I never heard that before. Like others have mentioned on here, I heard it was from the lack of Protein. Very interesting! I will definintely talk to my doctor about that! Thank You! :)

I agree with the theories. I've heard many, especially the one about the lack of protein being the main contributer to hairloss. I did not, however, know about breakouts. I'm going to read some reviews on Biotin.. thanks for the heads up!

Well I didn't take Biotin and I'm 9wks out, so I think I'll try the butter and hope for the best.

I also heard that it doesn't last forever and hair grows back. Hope that's right too.

Very thin fine hair here,LOL

I have just been to the gym and whilst drying my hair after I was so shocked at my hair loss! I was banded In September and I know my Protein was to low for a while but now I'm getting in between 60/80g a day. I don't fancy getting breakouts if that is a side effect if Biotin but do you guys think this is due to the lack of protein a few weeks ago and it'll right itself now? Thankfully I had a lot of hair but can really feel how fine its getting :0(

Hey all :) I am about a month away from being banded; I have my last 6 mo appt next week! (woohoo!) I have asked my dr about taking Biotin and he said it would be a good idea to go ahead and start taking it now. I have super thick hair so I'm not really as worried as I would be if I had thin hair, but I am afraid of the Hair loss factor (I've never been put to sleep so I have no idea how those meds are going to react in my system!) I too, read the reviews and people saying that it caused bad breakouts...I have acne prone skin even now as an adult, so I don't need any "help" breaking out...I had also read many people who said that taking biotin helped clear their skin, so I was hoping I would be one of those people. I've been taking (2 - 5,000 mcg) a day for almost a month now and I'm happy to report that I think I may be one of those people! My face has been clearer than it has been in a long time!

Hairloss is a direct result of the anesthetic. Im experiencing it after 8 weeks. I've been shedding a tremendous amount. Its scary. I've been taking biotin..multis Protein etc. All my research says to sit tight and let it run its course. Its very consuming. :/

I hadn't heard that Biotin leads to breakouts- I started taking 10,000 mg (5,000 mg 2 x a day) and it slowed my hair loss significantly- I also track my protien. I haven't had any noticable breakouts. I think starting now will at the VERY least get you in the habit of taking the supplement faithfully!

Good luck, and it has slowed down for me!

It is only hair and it will grow back. Better a healthy you with a hairpiece than obese with sexy hair!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
