Menstrual Pain Or Lap Band Discomfort?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I rarely get my period but usually it's just pelvic pain (this is my 3rd period in the last 9 months). I have multi-ovarian cyst syndrome, and sometimes I get immense pain from them but not recently. My lap band surgery was 9 months ago and the only complication was some phenric nerve irritation - which causes shoulder pain now and again.

Right now my pelvic area hurts, not badly, but just a little. I'm having diahrea, I'm drinking lots of Water and liquids but am not peeing that much. But what worries me the most is that my upper stomach feels uncomfortable. This hasn't ever happened. It's not painful, per say, just uncomfortable. I haven't had pain there since a few days after my surgery.

My discomfort is located where the port or band is - dunno which, it's where I can feel the hard thing under the skin.

I just moved from CA to NJ. I don't have a bariatric surgeon here - instead I see a local weight loss doctor who knows how to fill it but is not a surgeon and has limited knowledge of the lap band.

Oh and I lost 8 lbs in one week from the 2nd to the 9th (got weighed in by my new doctor both times) I went from 230 to 222, which is very unusual for me. I only loose about 3 lbs a week at max, usually 1.5 lbs a week. This kinda worries me because I was eatting badly (Hurrican Sandy took my power, so was ordering take-out all week) and my only exercise was a 2.2 mile walk one day and some push-ups sparringly over the week.

My worry is that something's wrong with my lap band. And I moved across the country so my surgeon can't help me. I hope someone can put my worries to rest and say that it's normal for the lapband to feel uncomfortable during your period.

You need to find an actual bariatric surgeon. Please don't take this offensively, I don't mean it to be, but you shouldn't be letting someone with "limited knowledge" of the Lap Band touch it to begin with. It's simply not worth the risks to your health and well being.

Find a real bariatric surgeon and get it checked out. It's always better safe than sorry.

Best wishes.

Where are you in NJ?

I agree, I need to find an experience surgeon. I just don't know the area that well and the only surgeons are all the way in Princeton. Seeing as I just need the occasional fill / tightening, I thought this doctor could do it. She hasn't done anything yet, though.

I'm in the Raritan area of NJ.

I am in South Jersey but have heard good things about Dr. Michael Nusbaum in Morristown. There is also the Institute for Weight Loss in Perth Amboy. Lots of choices around Raritan.

I actually know where Morristown is! Perth Amboy is where my other cousins live, and that area is a bit too far. I'm originally from Long Branch, NJ, and I moved to CA 4 years ago, but grew up in NJ. Love being back in NJ, regardless of the storm. Hope you faired well! :) I was without power for 2 weeks lol.

I'll call up that doctor tomorrow - it's Veterans Day and I have a whole day planned to stay with my veteran friends. Thank you!

No problem. I actually grew up in Washington just north of Clinton. We were ok down here but my family up there didn't do so great. My sister just got here power back on Saturday!

Good luck with everything!

Definitely call the nearest Lap Band surgeon. But see a doctor soon. 8 lbs is a lot to lose in one week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
