I am home now - was banded yesterday 5/12. Everything went great! :clap2: I was one of the lucky ones that was able to come home the same day of surgery. No regrets at all. Today I'm just tired :notagree and have a little pain in my tummy - feels like someone punched me - like a bad bruise, but totally tollerable.

There was a gal in the bed next to me who had had gastric bypass a month ago, she had been in the hospital all week long throwing up green gunk. I'm SO GLAD that I didn't go that route. Lapband is the way to go imo. It might be a slower weightloss that GB but its much safer too. I felt so bad for that gal though.

Anyway - I'm offically a bandit now!! WooHoo!

Now that I am banded it all seems so easy of an operation. I did slep in the recliner in the hotel the first and scond day but now it is easy in and out of the bed. I have been walking fo at least 30minutes a day and in Cold Ass Terrible weather in Boston.. Does Boston know that this is supposed to be spring? Rain, cold, shootings, etc.....

I do have a concern as I seem to have a terrible taste in my mouth. I brush, mouthwash etc but still have that taste. Any suggestings on breathe fresheners?

I'm going to be banded on May 25th. I'm being banded by Dr. Kemmeter in Grand Rapids Michigan at MMPC (Michigan Medical, PC). They're an excellent group of people. It is followed with support groups, exercise therapists, behaviorists, and nutritionists. I'm on a product for 2 weeks through MMPC to shrink the liver as much as possible and then liquids for 2 weeks after and then meet with the nutritionist for the next steps. Luckily for me my insurance is covering most of it. All I have to pay for is $1294 which includes 4 weeks of product (my only source of nutrition).

My first appointment was 12/27 to start the process. Now reality has hit ... OMG ... :omg: I have been reading this site and have posted a couple of times. During the 12/27 meeting I guess the Dr. told me that he wanted me to try to lost 15 pounds on my own ... I don't remember the conversation, and when I had actually gained 14 pounds from December to last week, there was a possibility of a delay .:angry ... hey .... isn't that why I'm doing it, because of the difficulty I have to begin with losing and keeping it off? Anyway, so far so good, I talked them out of the delay with an understanding of them still possibly delaying it depending on how I do on product this week.

I'm rambling ... sorry.:)

Bottom line. I'm starting at 331#, 5'6" with a BMI of I think 52.:faint: My goal is in babysteps. I met another bander at the surgical support group (most of the group is gastric bypass patients) that lost 100 pounds in one year. I can't even imagine.

This place has been an absolute God-send  for me. So much support and so many answers to everything.

Thanks everyone .... and good luck to all.:nanahump:

I will be an official may bandster next thurs, the 18th. I am 4'11'' and 165lbs. I started at 175lbs. I have a BMI of 35 but have been dealing with severe hypertension and sleep apnea as well as some other minor things. I have tried every avenue to lose weight and have been unsuccessful. This really is a last resort for me. I realize that I don't have quite as much weight to lose as some of the people here, but I am pretty short and the excess 65lbs are taking a HUGE toll.

I have been reading such GREAT info here! Thank God I found this site! As much as they try to prepare you, they don't even come close to giving the info that everyone here has offered up...so THANK YOU!

I am having trouble with the ticker factory thing. Cant get it to paste. If someone would be willing to give really detailed insrtuctions I would really appreciate it. GOOD LUCK TO ALL! I look forward to being part of the group.

LindaV, i totally get the "cheat" and except for the fact that I spit it out before swallowing, I did the same. i have tripped the light fantastic by having creamed Soups...which I'm not supposed to have yet.

I'm wondering if any newbies have felt a swelling and uncomfortable feeling where the band probably is. It amazes me that insurance companies actually deny these surgeries for people that are truly suffering and battling this.:) It's preemptive medicine and it's a wonder they don't realize this. To me I would think it would be a no-brainer.:mmph:

Good luck JungleJim and all the May Bandsters!!

Hello, everyone! My computer was acting up and I finally got it fixed. I was amazed that there are now TWENTY SIX pages for us May bandsters.:nanahump: :Banane41: :Banane41:

I went back to work yesterday. Besides being a bit more tired than usual (I work 12 hours shifts.....who wouldn't be tired???:notagree ) I feel pretty good. I work in a pretty rough environment, I was afraid that my incisions might hurt, but I was feeling ok. Even after taking a ride with my superintendent, who doesn't know how to drive slow, especially over bumps. :)

I'm finding it very very hard to eat only 3 meals a day. My dietician told me to eat four when working, so I've been having an extra protien drink in the evening before I go home. It really helped today, I wasn't starving when I got home. I get up at 3 am, get to work a bit before 5 am to get my crew lined up. I eat around 6:30 when I get a bit of a lull, then try to eat every four hours. :hungry: I can sure tell when the four hours are up. Of course, eating Soup and protien drinks isn't really eating!:Banane30: My crew is very interested with what I'm allowed to eat.....it's kind of funny, a lot of them really get freaked out with the protien drinks.

By the time I get home at 8 pm, it's definitely time to go to bed. And that's where I am right now.....ready to go to bed.

Congrats to everyone that was banded in the last few days and good luck to any Monday bandsters.

And Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there in Band Land!:biggrin1:

I was banded on the 9th. I have felt the swelling and uncomfortable feeling at my band after sipping anything, but I'm not really worried about it. I think everything is just still swollen and tender.

I am on full liquids which to me is anything I could suck through a straw. That means thinned and blended Soups. I do feel full after about 1/2 cup of Soup, but it sure tastes good.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
