I was addicted to coke also, had several a day. I stopped cold turkey for the pre-op and honestly, I haven't wanted one. It has only been 10 days, but I am proud of myself. I stopped buying soft drinks so they aren't in the house. I hope I can continue to do as well as I have. I did have one caffeine headache but I think I am to focused on losing weight to even want another Coke!

I was addicted to diet coke. I had lap band surgery this year on April 9th; I have NOT had a soda since April 1st. . . but I crave one everyday. My surgeon said it was a BIG no no ~ so this is one rule I have followed with 100% accuracy.

Does anybody know if diet coke is okay during the 2 week Optifast phase? I thought it was because it's sugar free but wanted to double check before I go drinking it!

I drink diet ginger beer or lime and soda , not every day but sometimes when I need something refreshing and different. They have not caused me any problems. I didn't drink anything carbonated for months after my op as I thought we weren't allowed to, then I was told by one of the fill staff at my surgeons that it is an individual thing - if it doesn't cause you discomfort fine. I think it is like most things - moderation is key.

Considering all the hoops that you would have had to go thru insurance or the amount of money you paid for self pay, why would you even risk it. Everyone on here has a different take on it, but one of the most common lapband rules that is pretty consistant is no bubbles. I am not sure I could even live with myself knowing I threw away $16,000 for a coke. Being banded is a whole new life, out with the old (coke), in with the new.

Good luck.

I still drink Diet Coke...I don't drink coffee or tea so I use it as the caffine boost in the morning. Because I have made an effort to stop using a straw, I found a cup that I really like and when I pour the Diet Coke in the "fizz" seems to leave very quickly. It doesn't taste as good so I am slowly weaning my way off them. I have been carring a very small can of soda in my lunch bag to use if, and only if, I get "stuck". I have found that the carbination really helps in that situation...and after the stuck episode I finish the drink and enjoy those last few bubbles. Good luck to you!!!

I would set a soda budget for your son say $5 a week (since a soda is at least a dollar a peice) which he buys and consumes away from the house. If he is not old enough to be out on his own than he is not old enough to be drinking soda.

I guess we all have our little addictions. I beat my withdrawal from caffeine headaches by going 1/2 caffe for a week then using less and less caffeine. I drink caffeine free drinks now and don't taste the difference. I don't drink soda but I feel for you. It's all part of the "New Lifestyle" and the end product is worth every sacrifice. Good luck.

With the Coke and soft drinks in general, we bought a few at the store and said this is it. When this is gone, there will be no more. Luckily its just my daughter and I, so it was pretty easy to enforce. We don't miss it and it has been 3 full weeks! Its not an easy addiction to beat! Best of luck to you

Way before I started this journey I too was a Coke addict. I is d to arrive at work carrying a 2 liter everyday. It was bad. When I decided to kick, my coworkers helped me with tough love. I started sneaking into the ladies room to have some Coke in a stall. Eventually, it worked. Having one became something I turned to under very stressful situations...but I knew I wad headed for a relapse. Then came Coke Zero...I Love It.

Jump to this new me...Was told by my surgeon and nutritionist I would have to give up all carbonated drinks. If I chose to drink a soda it would have to be flat...oh hell no! I throw away flat soda...What is a Coke without the burn?

During my 2 week pre op, I had vanilla & chocolate Optifast. I HATE THE VANILLA! Can't throw it away what do I do? Another addiction I had was Ice Cream. I used to mix my vanilla ice cream with Coke, 7UP, Root Beer and Sunkist Orange. It tasted best after the ice cream melted and blended in...heavenly. Now I mix my left over Vanilla Optifast with flat diet coke, diet 7up, diet sunkist and diet root beer. I still have the flavor of the soda I miss with the benefit of a healthy Meal Replacement shake.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
