Has "hunger" Changed For You Since Banding?

Recommended Posts

Hi, as my screen name indicates, I'm a sleever. I've been on the sleeve forum a few months now.

I am interested in learning more about all forms of WLS. I'm pretty familiar withe mechanics of each of the operations.

What I'm really interested is more of the personal experiences. What is life like post band, do you still feel hunger after your pouch is full?

Not referring to head hunger here. That's an issue surgery cannot fix.

I appreciate any responses you may offer and am happy to offer my experiences(if desired) on the sleeve side.

I'm 3 weeks post op and have lost 10lbs since surgery. My appetite has changed drastically. I'm eating pretty much regular food now, but on the soft side. I eat about a cup of food per meal, some times a bit less. When I get about half way done with my portion, I really focus on each bite and as soon as I feel satisfied, I stop. It's a subtle feeling and I'm still learning when to stop.

My relationship with food has changed dramatically. I don't think about food all the time, like I did before. I'm using food as nourishment instead of a hobby and a friend.

I hoped with all my heart that this would be doable for me but I was very unsure. I LOVED to eat. I still enjoy my meals, but when I'm done, I'm done and not thinking about the food that I just put in the fridge and feeling the need to finish it off. I know it will still be there for my next meal and I don't have the need for it until then.

Since I'm eating such small amounts, I cook 2 to 4 portions of whatever I make for myself and save or freeze the extra, that way I need to think about food , even less.

I know its eary on, but this is working for me. I feel normal and not obcessed by food. I can easily make it from one meal to the next and even beyond and with no hunger.

Hi There! I am 4 years out. When I am physically hungry it feels the same as before, and I'd swear I could eat the same amount. But I get full much sooner, and the smaller amount keeps me satisfied much longer.

A meal will hold me about 4 hours now, with a meal being 2-3 oz of solid Protein, a cup or so of salad, and a small bit of starch. I eat about 1500 calories a day to maintain. The band has taken away my obsession with food. As my physical hunger is satisfied, I find I don't think constantly about my next meal or snack.< /p>

Not everyone's experience is the same as mine. This has been the easiest weight loss plan ever in my life. The weight came off with ease and I am maintaining that loss with ease.

My appetite has diminished greatly since being banded. It took probably took 3 fills to get to that point. I am amazed at how little I can eat and how long it sustains me before the stomach growls and says feed me.

I was banded in Feb 2012 and have had 2 fills to date. My desire for food has greatly diminished. Eating is not a pleasurable experience as it used to be. Now it's purely for nutrition. I get overwhelmed at the site of food because I don't know what will go down and what won't. I'm still in the discovery stages of it all and I continue to learn what works for me. I don't regret anything and am learning to slow way down and enjoy the whole process. I have lost 45 lbs to date and of course I feel great and am fitting into clothes I haven't worn in a couple years.

I have only experienced actual physical hunger maybe a dozen time in the almost two years I've been banded. I also don't really get a full sensation, more like a satisfied sensation. I too pretty much just eat for nutrition, but I don't see it as a bad thing. I love it :)

I have been banded a little over six months. I had one fill at six weeks and am never hungry. My first meal is typically at noon and dinner at 7 or 8 pm. I am sooooo surprised with it and mostly shocked. For the first 4 months I forced 3 meals done because people are supposed to eat three healthy meals a day! My NUT and surgeon finally got it thru my head to go off the Protein drinks and only eat when I am hungry. I have been doing this for a month now and the weight is still melting off. I am down 104 pounds.

Everyone is different with the hunger issue and I just feel really fortunate.

Wow, thank you all for posting. This is aparantlly a big misconception that many people have about he band. I was always lead to believe that hunger would be a much bigger issue with the band.

Tell us about your sleeve.

Well, what would you like to know?

I am in love with my sleeve. I got it on May 23rd & really it's been smooth sailing for me. Although there are rare complications from the sleeve, I have experienced none of them. I am down 70lbs as of yesterday morning.

I will say, the hardest thing I've had to deal with is all the misconceptions about the sleeve. Many people liken it to RNY which couldn't be more wrong. The belief that the sleeve bears any relation to a pouch (used in RNY) is just not based in facts. Stretching a sleeve is nearly impossible. The sleeve is made up of the muscular portion of the stomach, and the soft, stretchy portion is removed. It would take months of constant abuse to stretch a sleeve just 1 more ounce.

Right now I'm just shy of 3months out. I can comfortably eat about 4-5oz at a sitting, if I'm eating a dense Protein like chicken breast it's closer to 3.5-4oz. Once I reach my maximum capacity, which is reached between 8-12months my stomachs capacity will be between 8-10oz.

At this point I can eat anything I want to, just in much smaller portions. I have chosen to eliminate all bread, Pasta, rice ,potatoes, & fried foods from my diet till I reach my goal weight then I will likely add back Pasta, just a lot less of it. The others I have found after a couple weeks, I really dont miss them.

I have tried pretty much everything food wise since surgery from Dr. Pepper to pizza & have found that with a much smaller stomach they just aren't as appealing as they once were. I've got limited space, & I only want good stuff in there. Any garbage food I consume displaces nutrition, which makes it so much less appealing.

I was very athletic & health minded in my mid twenties and earlier. Then the pursuit of money took over and I let my health go. I hated my self for many years for letting myself get so fat and out of shape. I ended up damaging my body & acquiring weight related issues, which made me feel like more of a failure. Now, with my new tool, I'm starting to really love myself again, and this is motivating me to help others find that love within themselves.

I believe everything happens for a reason. When I look back and ask myself why would someone who was so athletically gifted allow themselves get more than 150lbs overweight? I can say it wasn't my plan, but being here has given me a perspective that I wouldn't have otherwise had. And now my goal in life has changed. Now that I've experienced this, my goal is to continue taking my life back, & to help others gain control of theirs.

thanks for the sleeve information!

My Band has given me an understanding of the difference between "hungry" and "not hungry"....the difference between 'sport eating' and 'satiety eating'.

It's nice even 7+ years postOp to wake in the morning without the "gotta EAT" sensation.

Your doctor told u to not drink Protein shakes and mine said his patients who drink them lose faster? I drink them when I'm hungry and it seems to help. So confusing

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
