Self-Pay How Soon Can I Have The Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to a seminar at NYU on Monday and am wondering how soon I can schedule the surgery? Anyone a self pay patient that got banded at NYU Langone medical center?

Thanks in advance!

I was not self pay and am not in NY, but have seen self pays who are banded within a month of starting. It depends on if the insurance still requires a lot of testing.

I would think if you're paying yourself after completing all the required testing, you could be banded right away.

I was self pay, although not at NYU, and banded within a month of my seminar meeting.

My surgeon has done self pay within a 2 week period of having their seminar. That is not th eusual thing, however. Best of luck. Karen

It really depends on what type of pre-op diet and testing your surgeon requires. I was self-pay in Colorado and my surgeon did not have me do any pre-op stuff except 2 weeks of Atkins diet to shrink liver. I was banded 3 weeks after my consult because that is when both of our schedules had an opening.

I was self pay... Went in for initial consultation to meet my doctor, they did the bloodwork that same day, and I had my band 2 weeks later on Valentines day!!!!!!

I am self pay and didn't have to have any pre-tests. I could have had it anytime after the 7-10 day pre-op South Beach diet, but chose to wait unto 8/31 to enjoy the last month of the pool.

Thanks guys! NYU requires psychologist, nutritionist visits and 2 week liquid diet. The surgery gives me hope! I've been sitting on the side lines of life for too long.

I was a self pay in Tampa. My first consult was October 20 and my surgery was December 9. During those 7 weeks I had a psych eval, met with the NUT, had blood work and preop cardio testing and my 2 week liquid diet which started the day before thanksgiving. My hubby was so supportive we took a few dAys off prior to beginning my 2 weeks of liquid hell and took a 5 day road trip up the coast eating all my favorite foods and drinking lots of adult beverages. It was a ball but I was SO ready

To get banded after all that fun!

Fun y but just a few weeks ago we took a road trip up the coast and visited some of the same places as I did that weekend... I didn't over indulge and managed to lose a pound! I love my band.... Hope you do too!

Who was your doc in Tampa? I am in total turmoil trying to make the final decision on the band. I will be a self pay but just trying to decide. I live in Orlando and looking at a Dr in Tampa. I want to loose max of 50 lbs and feel the Band is the answer but oh so scared. Are you happy with your decision?

I'm going to jump in here, suesixter, I go to Dr. Grossbard, in Zephyrhills, Florida. He is great. He does surgery at Dade City hospital. I can recommend him as he did not only mine, but also, my daughter and my son's surgery. Best wishes, whoever you decide on. karen

Thanks so much Karen for jumping in. I just made an appointment for my seminar with Dr Grossbard. I just have to pray from here on out. From what I've read on dr Grossbard and your recommendation, I am feeling good about my decision. Thank you, sue

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
