Hi,

I have read that you cannot drink carbonated beverages, and you should stay away from coffee. Can someone explain the reason for staying away from either of these drinks.< /p>

thank you.

My doctor advised no soda due to the carbonation's effect on your band. It increases the pressure from below. coffee is an OK beverage for me. Of course, moderation must be kept in mind. That's sometimes a hard thing for me to do... love that coffee!

from what I read- Carbanation can 'inflate' your pouch therefore stretching it. I believe some have said as long as its 'flat' you can drink it. As far as the coffee is concerned I think early on you should lay off of it because the 'caffiene' inside the coffee acts as a natural diruetic and you can lose Fluid, which you know you shouldn't lose during the early stages, thus possibly causing dehydration. However, I think eventually you can drink it as I have seen reading on the threads.

If you are unsure, ask your surgeon or nutrionist ... I am just stating somethings I have read on here...

Best of luck to you :)

coffee is fine' date=' the only thing we can't have is carbonation. The reason being is the carbonation expands the stomach below the band, and if it happens enough or severely, it can press upward and cause the band to slip.[/quote']

That makes sense. Thanks!

i guess I'm the rule breaker. After 6 mths of no sodas, I went thru the Carls Jr drive thru and got a Diet Coke. Best 1 sip I ever had! In the last 2 yrs (had my band almost 3 yrs ago), I drink a sip or 2 of soda about 3-4 times a week. I've never ordered one for myself (cept that first one thru the drive thru!) and I just take a sip or 2 from hubbys. And I drink coffee daily. I notice if I take more than 2 sips of soda, it does hurt tho.

Very happy I don't have to give up coffee. I guess how you sip it becomes the priority.

I was told the carbonation can cause gas and it might cause the pouch to stretch. As others have said, "flat" soda is fine. I used to drink Diet Mountain Dew multiple times daily but find I no longer crave it.

My Doctors guidelines say: "Wean yourself off ALL CAFFEINE AND ALL CARBONATED beverages. These items will need to be avoided for LIFE! :o:(

I have continued to enjoy my iced coffee every morning since 3 weeks post op; I did not feel coffee once a day was too risky, though I know I am supposed to only have Decaf.

My understanding is that the caffeine is a known stomach irritant, and the last thing we need is an irritated pouch. I'm also on Prevacid, and have not experienced ill effects from my once a day habit.

I have not had any cravings for carbonated beverages...though there have been several occasions which I wished I could have a glass of wine...

I'm not banded yet and I've not had any problem giving up carbonated beverages. I've tried to be good with giving up coffee but sometimes places don't have Decaf and I just HAVE to drink the leaded stuff!!! LOL

Another thing doctors worry about with coffee is all the calories you can add from milk, syrups, and sugar. I have one cup with caffein black with Splendra in the morning. The rest of the day I switch to Decaf.< /p>

I enjoy my coffee, Decaf every day. My nut says to only use FF 1/2 + 1/2. I seriously miss my flavor syrups though. I hear there are SF ones, but I don't know if they would taste as good. I also drink in moderation. My problem is I miss my DD iced coffee w/mocha. So, I make it at home. Here's a secret I'm going to tell you all...don't laugh... I saved my lg iced coffee cups from drive thru's and put my iced coffee in them, to make me feel like it was from a drive thru. Silly, but it works for me.

I have a Latté about four times a week; I order Decaf no-fat no flavor. I never liked flavor in my coffee so it works for me. I could not stand the Protein drinks so this helped me get my daily Protein.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
