Post Op Scarring- What To Do To Avoid It?!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was banded on 7/13/2012 and am concerned about possible scarring, as I tend to scar fairly easily.

Any advice or personal stories on how to/you avoided scarring?

Also....when can I begin these methods...week 2, 3?

Any response would be greatly appreciated!!

I read on here about Vitamin E Skin Oil, they sell at Walmart for like $4. I was just banded yesterday but don't think I can start using it until my bandage strips fall off. I will ask for sure at my follow up on Tuesday, hope this helps!

Hi Kelsey,

I started using Mederma the minute my steri-strips fell off. I am almost 7 months out and you can't see my scars if you are standing more than 5 feet away from me. I have VERY fair skin so I was totally surprised at how well the Mederma worked. My husband was banded after me and he generally forgets to use the Mederma so his scars are not as "pretty" as mine. LOL

Welcome to the bandster club! Good luck on your journey!!

I'm a year out and I couldn't find my incision sites if I tried! I really wouldn't worry about it. I always figured it was better than my big ole stomach anyay!!! If you scar easiy the above mentioned vit. E oil is what my plastic surgeon reccommened after my BR and TT.

I've used Mederma in the past and had good results. Eventually though, after 2 laparotomies, a robot hysterectomy, gallbladder, and now lap band, I've given up on making them fade. My stomach looks like a road map of scars, but I've known for a while now my stomach will never be bikini-ready :) So I just let it go....

I used Maderma after a C-section and you can't see my scar at all. I am now using it for lap band scars, so far it looks pretty good:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
