What's The Norm?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I am exactly 2 months post op and am down 30lbs. I understand that the norm for weight loss is 1-2lbs a week but there have been times where I've lost nothing for 2-3 weeks and where I've lost nearly 5lbs a week. I am getting my second fill tomorrow (I'm at 4cc'snow). What have you all noticed is a normal amount of weight to lose in the first few months, and how does it change in the future?

The quick answer is that there is no such thing as normal when you speak of the band. Some lose nothing and others lose 40-50 lbs. It depends on how much you have to lose. The more you have to lose the more you will lose in the beginning. The weight you lose in the beginning 6 weeks is mostly Water and not fat, unless you have dieted to the extreme.

Once you get to the point that you have lost most of your retained Water, you should lose 2-6 lbs a month depending on how much you consume and how much you exercise. Expect your weight to yo-yo as it is now, always. Medications, carbs, sodium, menstrual cycles all can cause you to retain fluids and mess around with your daily weight loss. Don't get "weight loss" and "fat loss" confused.

I have averaged about 5 pounds a month since being banded. Not amazing, but slow and steady wins the race!

I lost nothing the first 4 mths. I didnt follow the rules and ate just like before my band. It wasn't till my 3rd fill that I felt the band was doing its job. I dont think theres really a "norm" cuz all of us are so different. After my 3rd fill tho I lost about 7-10 lbs a month.

Good luck

Well, I just got back from getting my band fill. They said I need to eat about 20g more of Protein a day. My band is now at 5.5cc but apparently my weight loss is right on track! They said that normally they see 30lb lost in 6 months, so I'm ahead of the game!

I'm 6 mos out and have only lost. 30 lbs so it sounds like your doing great! I'm at 6cc and not sure if I need another fill or not. I do wish it would come off faster but at least it's coming off!!

Bandedlauren, I think it's great that you have taken control of your weight issues. When I was 20 in 1976 there was no lap band and I would have been too scared to try it. I really give you credit for doing this now so you can enjoy the benefits longer. Congratulations.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
