Very nervous, complications

Recommended Posts

Hello from SA. I am sceduled for op coming up in April. I went last year in October for surgery and awoke to find it wasnt done due to complications with my throat. The anatethesist couldnt place the tubes down my throat after trying for 1.5 hrs they stopped. I have been told my next surgery in april will involve paralising my throat and keeping me awake up until the tubes are placed for breathing & then they will knock me out to perform rest of operation. Naturally Im quite nervous about this and they said they dont even know if I can be done as I am now classed as a difficult intubation.

Has any one else out there had pre op nerves and nearly cancelled. I think about it daily now as its getting closer & closer?:help: last itme was bad enough, mentally preparing myself, giving up smoking, arranging babysitters etc and I kept thinking I shouldnt have it done beacause its elective.

Thanks for your reply. The Dr. said it is very thick and short (my throat)and the genetic makeup of my anatomy makes it difficult to pass the breathing tubes down my throat. The said they really wont know any more until April, if I decide to go ahead The anathesist wants to have a good look??

I now wear a medic alert Bracelet as per their request and for my safety, as if i was ever in an accidnet the medical staff would need to know im a "Difficult intubation" should they need to ressusitate.

The doctors asked if I snore badly- which i do- and when i sleep the muscles (& fat) around my throat relax and close over my throat causing me wake up in a sudden every so often when i probably stop breathing.

Thats all I can explain really of my undertanding of what they told me last year.

Wow Jen, That is scary. Have you been tested for sleep apnea (SP) My husband has it very bad and was having all kinds of problems. He has been sleeping with a machine now for the past yr and a half and he is like a new person.

Has anyone said anything to you about this?

Hi sunsett, I havent followed up on sleep apnea yet, but yes i suspect thats what it is along with bad genetics. I will look into it further with my local doctor if it continues to a point that I get really worried.

Jen

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
