Why did your surgery get cancelled?

That's a very good question. Surgeon was two hours late which then made it impossible to perform surgery due to other doctors and patients scheduled for same OR. This was on a Friday and my surgeon was going out of town which has delayed timeline for rescheduling. It was a big bummer since I was ready and had taken time off (my hubby also took time off for me as well as the week we thought I'd be recovering. I'm now in the process of re-evaluating who, where and when... Although I really like the surgeon I originally chose. Can I count on them again or future aftercare commitment?

My Doc told me to use 6 slim fast a day and then broth other Clear Liquids for two weeks prior. I got the Cans of slimfast and made it easy since I took them to work! They were also right there to go and not much thinking about it. It isn't nearly as bad as you think and you will get through it. Just think it is to get the size of your liver down so he can perform the surgery better. My doc said if it wasn't shunk down he could tell I cheated and he would close me up. I didn't want to go through that humiliation, so it kept me honest! Eye on the prize and you will do fine!!! The worst is the first few days, my suggestion is try to start to detox from sugars as much as possible before, it will make it easier.

It was super hard. But I knew I had to do it in order for the surgery to go on. Looking ahead at the future was a huge motivation because after the surgery I knew I would be on a road to success!

I think I would make an appointment with him to discuss this. I would probably throw a huge fit and tell him how much time he wasted and issues he cause by not performing the surgery the day it was scheduled. I could not imagine that happening! Stay strong, it will happen before you know it and I would call that Doctors office everyday until he gave you a new surgery date even if he said he was booked for a while I would say oh well, I was booked and you screwed it up., so I need you to work me in asap. It's your money and you should have the choice.

i just started my two week pre-op liquid diet on Monday and it isn't as bad as i thought it would be. of course, i'm only two days in. the only thing that gets me is the lack of "real" (MEAT, cheese, etc.) flavored things. all the juices, Jello, puddings, etc. either fruit or chocolate flavored. besides the chicken and beef broth, i got nothing. i see some of you can have salads, lean meats and other things not on my list. i'm going to call my surgeon's office to see what i can do, lol

yea, every dr is different. though liquid diet is the hardest thing i've ever done, i think its a good thing.

i'm on day 10 of the same liquid diet. yea, the broths willl make the difference since they're the only non-sweet based thing. lol i found day 4 was the worst and then day 5 and on... you're used to it. i think its good because it will get us used to the liquid diet post-op... cause i cant imagine going through the first few days of this liquid things while recooperating from post-op. it was hard enough while non-post op! so just hang in there! just remember that there IS an end to the liquid diet and you WILL have solids again! :) and try to distract yourself when you start thinking about it. :)

did you get headaches at all? last night, i thought mine would explode. i just knocked myself out with sleep meds to sleep through the pains - then thought, i probably shouldn't have those either. i'm hanging in there. i realize i'm being dramatic for just day two, lol!

you know, i'm the kind that normally gets migrains when i dont eat... but, praise God, i haven't had a single headache or migrain. are you making sure to have enough shakes? like 3-4 a day? and stay hydrated. actually, i started to get one the other morning but i took tylenol as soon as i noticed it and it went away. i'm glad though because i normally take excedrine, but i was told not to take aspirin or iburofen in the week or so before surgery. :-/

haha i've BEEN dramatic about this liquid thing... trust me. my poor husband has to hear me complain about not eating all the time. :) thankfully, he's patient and we laugh about it. :)

hang in there!!

Oh Ashley, I TOTALLY know where you're coming from. I was absolutely terrified leading up to the liquid diet. Something about the idea of "the end of food completely and forever" threw me into an absolute panic.

However.

It was fine. Just try not to drive yourself crazy. And remember that you WILL be able to eat after the surgery. This is not your last food or anything else. You can do it, and once you start, it's much much better than the crazy anticipation...

Good luck!!

You can do just stay strong and remember the reasons why you are doing this. I haven't find out my surgery date yet but have started changing my eating habits. I have 2 shakes a day and a very lite dinner. I'm doing this to prepare myself mentally and physically.

I feel like a mad woman. I am on day 3 of liquid diet and I feel nauseous. I swear if I drink another shake or drop of Water I am going to puke. My doctor is very strict, 3 shakes a day and water only. No broth, no pudding or Jello. I am having it rough you all. I think if I was able to gave other things it would nt be this bad.

I was on a high Protein diet for the few weeks before surgery, not liquids only. The whole idea, my doctor explained, was to prepare the body for high Proteins, and to help shrink the liver which can interfere with the procedure if it's not shrunk. I was on a 2 week liquid diet (protein drink like Syntrax Nectar shakes) and then I integrated solid foods slowly. But that seems pretty harsh, 2 weeks pre op diet liquids only!

Ezekiel, Ask your doctor if you can add spices to the broth (herbs can affect anestesia so be sure to ask). Mrs Dash baked chicken non salt flavoring is quite nice. I added it to post op to broth and smooth Soups.< /p>

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
