This Might Be A Stupid Question...

Do they put Fluid in the band during surgery? Or do you go for the fill 6 weeks later? Or both...? Just confused.

I am not banded yet but I asked my surgeon this question during one of my visits. I think it depends on the surgeon, he told me that he will give me a head start and put 3-4cc in at the time of my surgery.

My doctor does not put anything in the band until 6 weeks post-op.

All doctors have their own way of doing things.

My doctor waits the 6 weeks and then depending on how your weight loss is going ,and of course how the patient feels, will decide to do a fill. I proudly say I have gone 6 months with NO fill and have managed to lose about 55 lbs. its getting harder , my portions are getting a little bigger but md said as long as Im still losing weight Im ok. We will see in 8 weeks :D

All doctors are different.

I asked mine and he said its very little. However at my 2 wk appt, he said I had 3ccs in it from the surgery and then gave me my first fill at that same appt.

My doctor said that he will "aggressively" fill my ban at surgery (July 2) and most of his patients do not normally need additional fills. I like the sound of that!

My surgeon put 5 cc's in my 14 cc band at surgery. Then at my 6 week appointment he started filling more- I'm up to a little over 9 cc's in my band. Feel some restriction, and steadily losing!

my band was empty at surgery, first fill was 5 wks post op. still hungry very little restriction with 4 cc in a 14cc band, plan to ask for anohter fill after 4th of july, give myself time to see if i can still lose steadily without another fill.

every dr is different. ive got a 10 cc band in and there was no fill in it when i had it implanted. others here have had some fill though so it depends on who you have to do the op. personally i didnt have any problems with no fill at surgery date. i think my lapband hell period was about the same as everyone elses... no worse .

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
