Decent tasting protien Idrinks

Recommended Posts

I am being banded on 3/30/06 and I am looking for a decent tasting protien drink that I can drink right from the start. I tried the one at the doctors office and it was horrible. Does anyone have advice on any that taste ok?

The first one my doc gave me (myocel) was absolutely disgusting. Then I went back the day of surgery to pick up more to make sure I had enough for post op and they gave me one called Reclaim RX. I got one in Swiss Cream vanilla and the other is Double something chocolate (can't remember the exact name)..... I have these EVERY day for Breakfast and they're really good. Someone once upon a time posted a thread about a shaker for Protein shakes... it's a plastic container with a round whisk inside... I ordered 4 and use one every day. Keeps me from dragging out the blender and also keeps the amount of foam / air down.

I am glad you asked that:) . I am crossing my fingers on getting banded in april. working on cash. but I always want to learn about what will make this process more comfortable and knowing about whats best to drink after the banding is good info. I was wondering if you can get Protein Drinks from a grocery store or do you have to go to a special store?

The drink PhotoNut is talking about is Isopure Zero Carb Ready to Drink. Tastes like Gatorade or Kool Aide. Fabulous but pricey. Get ready to pay 2-3 per 20 OZ BOTTLE. Ebay has some cases for sale. Grape Frost is my fav. There is another post somewhere on this board about em. Hope this help. BTW, this drink comes in powder form to, havent tried it though.

http://store.bariatriceating.com/proteinpowders.html (expensive, but good stuff -- I LOVE the AchivOne lattes, they're sorta like Starbucks Frapacinos)

Nature's Best (Isopure) -- I get 'em at Vitamin Shoppe, my GNC doesn't carry them : http://www.naturesbest.com/index.html?section=Shopping&catsec=208&-session=thisSession:66E77B3BDD1AD9D09A6A6584CEA7A0E2

But for my standard, every day shakes, I use Six Star Whey Protein from Walmart (~$15 for 2 pounds). They're near the pharmacy, with the Slim-Fast. You have to mix 'em, but they taste great & are 20g Protein per scoop.

I always have some of the Isopure 0 Carb & the AchievOne Lattes on hand, just in case, though. That way when I'm running late I grab one of them (instead of a milk shake, lol).

I was banded Wednesday and have been using Isopure Zero Carb powder mix in Dutch chocolate. It's not bad tasting, but will leave an aftertaste. I mix 3 scoops (about 75gm protein) in a 16.9 oz bottle of Water and refrigerate overnight. In my short experience, it's better really, really cold or heated, like hot chocolate. Tastes close to chocolate milk, but not exact. They had several fruit flavors, vanilla, etc.

I didn't realize how much cheaper it was online, and paid almost $55 for it. Lesson learned.

If you have time and a blender you can make your own.

I make a couple a day for my dear wife that was banded two weeks ago.

We buy Protein powder (vanilla or chocolate) in big tub at Walmart. Mix the Protein, with milk, vanilla yogurt, a couple of ice cube, with some fruit (frozen or fresh) for flavor. Strawberrys and bannanas are awesome together. You can mix and match the Protein Powder flavors with different fruit flavors to have way more variety than you could buy in a store.

I use to make them for myself for after workouts.

I have used natural Peanut Butter, and cooked oatmeal (to make them more filling) in the shakes in the past.

We figured up that a shake serving should have around 15-20 grams of protein plus Calcium and stuff from the milk and yogurt.

So in terms of the actual brand/type of Protein drinks, I just drink whatever Janet buys  But I can say that just about all of them can be improved drastically by adding stuff to it.

I've added some of the stuff Jason just mentioned, and we've also invested in a variety of extra flavoring. At the moment, I have vanilla, coconut, banana, and maple extracts - and a variety of sugar-free syrups (the kind you add to coffee, for example) like hazelnut, rasberry, etc.

These things are sugar-free, and almost all of them are carb-free, so they're ok nutritionally... and they can radically improve even the worst Protein mixes.

My favorite protien mix is "Unjury" protien powder. It tastes great and it mixes completely smooth unlike alot of other powders I tried.

I hear the whey Protein isolate drinks are great. They are a bit more expensive, come pre-bottled and are like fruit flavored drinks.< /div>

Susan, where do you buy these drinks? I was thinking of a whey powder and 1% milk and a blender. Everything seems to taste better when it comes from the blender then a can of something. I've never heard of a fruit flavored one though and it sounds good. Is it on line only ordering? I've been practicing some of my own using Slim-Fast Optima and 1% mile with some chocolate yogurt. It really is good, especially cold. I must be weird because I like Slim-Fast, but I've heard contradictory things about calorie content, etc.

Thank you all! I will be buying these in the next couple of days. But can I drink the ones with milk right after surgery?

Sunta... I'm with you... Unjury was the best I found... no nasty odor... mixes well... simply great! I tried a lot of powders and this was the one for me... it was worth the additional cost. www.unjury.com

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
