Drinks And Meals

Running scared,

I do believe your doctor is the ONLY one who says you can eat and drink?

Anyone else have their doctor tell them this?

I think I will stick to what I have been told. No drinking and eating!

My dr told us recently at support group that as long as you wait a minute after taking a small bite of food, then a small sip of Water is fine to drink while you eat. I only do so at dinner and it only adds up to a small amount of Water. I would say less than a quarter cup.

Do you think it matters how long you have been banded to eat and drink at the same time? I have not been banded yet but was told absolutely no drinking 30 min before and 45 min after food. I am wondering if you can later on???

I think being told a "few sips is okay", is one thing but i think this person (running_scared) isn't talking about just sips. I've interpreted it as drink how ever much you want as long as you wait 45 second to eat before and after. To me it sounds like this person either has a radical doctor or they have their info mixed up.

Regardless, listen to your own doctor. It's my understanding that the whole point of not drinking before, during and after a meal is to keep the food from liquefying and passing from the pouch, therefor losing the full sensation. I too am going to have troubles not having a full glass of Water with my meals but to me it's worth it. I'm ready to be able to eat a portion instead of a whole pan of food.

You will get used to it. I would go to restaurants and drink 3 glasses of iced tea preband days. Now when I go out, maybe I drink about 1/2 inch of the glass of Water and I am fine. And honestly, I eat my Proteins first and I don't think the whole idea that the food is making my pouch contract and sending signals to my brain that I am full. I eat my portioned out meals and that is it. For the most art, I always feel like I can eat more but I don't. I wish I was one who could get full on 1/2 c food!

My dr. has me on the 30/30 rule.. Not drinking 30 before or after a meal.. I did find it hard at first, because I'm a huge drinker.. I drink a lot always have... I count the seconds until I can have a drink, but it is getting easier to deal with so I guess with time you just get used to it..

I think it has more to do with restriction than length of time with the band.

My husband was banded almost two years ago, but hasn't had a fill in about 10 months. He still doesn't drink a lot during meals, but he can drink more now than he used to be able to.

I've never understood the 30 minutes before you eat rule? Why? The Water passes through immediately and should cause no problem right?

Regarding the sipping during eating, I think we all have so much time to lose so much weight that experimenting with just sipping may help some people who get stuck easily. If it results in all food being passed through the stoma and no satiety I wouldn't continue the practice.

I did read somewhere that the esophogus massages the food into our stomach and of course the pouch would be doing the same. There's some indications that these palpatations are condusive to sending a message to the brain that the stomach is satisfied. One would think that for those people we all know of who are "naturally" thin, they may need fewer palpatations to reach that satiety level than most bandsters.

I don't have my information mixed up, but thanks for assuming.

food only stays in the pouch for longer than about 30 seconds, when you are stuck. The clinic dietician doesn't recommend drinking a lot while you eat, because then you fill up on liquid, instead of food. That being said, she told me that it is alright to drink a bit while eating (like one glass of water), as long as you don't do it in the same mouthfuls.

I'm not telling people to go against their doctor's recommendations at all, but just sharing what mine says. Also, a lot of research has come out recently, that changes the way doctors understand the functionality of the lap band. This is where the information about the sensation from solid food comes from, as opposed to the 'food drains slowly from the pouch' thing that most people were originally told.

Hey all' date='

Was it hard for you to get used to not being able to drink while eating a meal? I am used to drinking a lot while eating and am afraid that this will be really hard for me. How do you deal with thirst while eating? Any tips?[/quote']

Not really. I found the healthier my food choices the less salty the food. The only time I am thirsty after eating is at a party and foods tend to be higher in fat/Cal's/salt.

My surgeon and dietician both said that I can drink as much as I want before and after a meal. As long as it has been 60 seconds since my last bite. It should take 60 seconds for a bite of food to pass through the band from your pouch to your stomach and send the satiety signals to your brain. And drinking Water will not flush the food from your stomach--there is the pyloric sphincter between your stomach and your intestines. It's all anatomy.

I apologize. It wasn't my intention to offend. The information you have brought is very radical and must be looked at with scrutiny.

It is very different from what the majority of us understand and the way you were first explaining it was very confusing. Thank you for clarifying yourself.

I don't fully understand it but it sounds interesting. Do you happen to have any links to the research? I would enjoy being able to read some of it too and maybe ask my doctor about it.

My doctor said he did not care how much I drank BEFORE I ate and I can have a few sips during a meal; he really downplayed this issue. . . not sure why ?

That study looked at the mechanism by which food is transported across the lap band by patients, and it shows that the food does not remain in the pouch for very long, although slightly longer than food remains in the upper portion of the stomach, for unbanded folks.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
