I was wondering what people did before surgery in terms of practicing (chewing, not drinking with meals, small portions, etc.) I have been very bad and have not been doing any of the above and will be starting my three week liquid diet on Wednesday the 16th. Am I totally screwed or did anyone do the same and do ok after surgery? Don't get me wrong, I'm do committed to this and I did so good during the three month pre op diet with all these behaviors. I have just been enjoying myself and saying good bye to my old lifestyle because I am determined to do my best with the band.

Same post three times?

No, I didn't practice pre-op. It just meant I had to catch on quickly post-op. Have lost 60kg in 13 months so must be possible.

good luck.

I haven't had my surgery yet! May 18. Ive not been practicing but I have tried slowing my eating. After years of working where u get 20-30lunch n have to fit n a walk too u just learn to eat fast. It seems to b helping n I have never drank much liquid when I eat. I usually don't get anything until after, I'm still on my liquid diet so I haven't really had any practicing moments since may 3rd. Good luck n I'm sure u will do fine.

If I'm being honest, I haven't done a thing (yet). I feel I've been eating like a crazy person lately. But I am determined to get it together and do liquid diet before surgery. I think you'll be ok.

I gave up pop 6 months before surgery, started trying my best to eat 3 meals a day (sounds basic, but i hadn't had Breakfast daily since jr high), packing my lunch for work and cooking more. I also began exercising regularly. So nothing too drastic. A few days before my pre op liquid diet started I went crazy on steaks, fast food, pizza, candy etc. I was in panic mode... not the best decision haha. However I never cheated on the liquid diet and am sticking to the rules. I am 6 days post op now and so far so good.

I had almost 8 months between my first consult and surgery. I did not practice chewing but I did significantly change my food habits. Even after restiction the band is 50% mental. For the first six months for me it was more like 80% will power. The band will never stop you from eating junk foods (candy, crackers, ice cream). Anything that liquifies in your mouth will go right through the band.

As to the last supper mentality, stop. What foods do you think you won't eat again? I can eat any food I want; and I am at restriction. The only things I have problem with are cheap doughy white bread and raw carrots. My doctor does'nt want my band so tight I can't eat foods (the exception is you can be tighter in the morning than at night). I choose not to eat french fries/fried food/ice cream. If I'm at a party I can and will eat party food. The key is making it a treat and not a regular activity.

At a recent pre-op meeting. The 80/20 rule was bought up. Eat right and correctly 80% of the time. And leave a 20% margin for era. We are not all perfect. Or we'd all already be healthy and fit. We are human and make mistakes. The band is different for every single person. What works for one may not work for another. It will be a leading expirence as I go. My surg is aug 15. Can't hardly wait. I was told to try a timer set for meals so eat slower and chew. I'm having an issue as well with that. As a hairdresser, I have to eat quick ause I have clients waitin!! But I'm trying to make myself healthy now and taking the time I need. We can only try. Good luck to you!!!:)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
