Being Treated Different Already Before The Band!

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure where to post this because I am not banded yet but here it goes... Now that people are finding out that I am going to get the band I am already being treated differently and not in a good way. I have a friend, that is at the weight I would like to be, that complains to me that I will be all skinny and she will feel fat. Seriously? I thought she would be happy for me to start this process but she doesn't even want me to talk about it. Has anyone else experienced this before or even after they got the band? I'm so confused.

Sadly, this isn't uncommon. People feel very threatened when things change. I have a friend I won't even tell. She has always been competitive about her weight and has spent considerable money trying to lose weight. She has a very shortsighted view of WLS and instead of getting into it with her, I avoided telling her altogether. Thing is she has spent a ton of money and yo yo'd the last ten years all to be the same weight with the same health issues she started with. In that situation, one would think she would be open to other options. But she isn't and gets on a soap box whenever she can to speak out about it.

I've plenty of big friends that say I'll be shrinking, while they remain fat. It's almost like they're trying to put on a guilt trip. Some of my friends that are like that work in the same environment, and thus, are covered by the same insurance I went through to receive the procedure, but don't want to make the effect to get the process started.

You can live your life for you or for other people. People who don't care about your health and happiness are probably not good friends. Women are always looking for a way for attention all the size 2,4,6 “I am so fat” PLEASE!!! I would tell her maybe she could “tone up” while you are losing.

Cheri

After thought . . . . maybe not the nicest approach I am in a depressed mood sorry

I experienced the same thing.they are threatened and don't want to have to step their game up to keep up. But it always got me wondering why they were competing with me in the first place.... didn't they know I was fabulous from the get-go, so there's no point in competing. Lol

Girl, I hear you loud and clear. Unfortunatley, I had a friend that I recently had to cut off. If she saw that I was loosing weight, she would do anything to sabotage my efforts. She is miserable with her own life and does not want to see me succeed in mine. She has 2 kids and is recently divorced and struggling with her weight. She is not sympathetic to PCOS and does nothing to accomodate my restrictions. She would ask me to meet her at her house and that we would drive to the gym together, then beat around the bush so we would miss our class. Or if we went out to eat, she would try to drag me down with her bad habbits by ordering cheese cake. When I told her I was going to get weight loss surgery, she told me I didn't need it and then would share all of the horror stories she saw in the ER with staph infections and such.

I am honestly keeping my surgery a secret. I need to make this decision for me and my own good, and not base it off of what everyone else wants for me and thinks that I should do. Oh, and if you have "a pretty face" forget it! Thats when the real fur starts to fly because other girls see that you are going to look slammin which means..... more competition :)

Don't apologize, this is a place to get it all out right? Come to think of it she is a big time attention seeker. I bet after weight loss she won't want to hang out with me any more. Sucks to realize you're just the fat friend :(

Oh, a side note about keeping it a secret.... I need to make this decision for me. Ive had to cut out a few people because I just got tired of everyone trying to discourage me or telling me that its dangerous or that they don't want me to do it...

Ugh why do women bring other women down? Sabotage your weight loss efforts? That is awful! It is interesting how I get more support on this forum than I do with people that are "friends" of mine.

Why the need to guilt trip some else for making a positive decision? Jealousy?

just the fat friend lmao love it.... Cheri, not harsh at all... it is the truth. I have PCOS and its damaged me... so when my "friend" of 10 years saw that I got my teeth bleached, lazer hair removal on my face and planning surgery, in addition to loosing 60 lbs on my own.... she was spitting bullets. So instead of being happy for me, she started making snyde comments. If I asked her where she got a shirt, she would say "Express... but they only go up to a size large" even though I can wear a large from Express! She would just say things to bring me down.... and it worked. I feel alot better now that I don't have her abuse in the back of my head screwing with my thoughts. I call girls like her "Alpha Females".... they always have to be the leader, always have to feel superior, and always have to look better and have it better than you in life.

How do you remain a friend when you know all this?

This is why I am so glad I didn't tell anyone other than my family that I was having lap band! People in general are very judgemental and can't stand it when someone else is successful. I figured that I'd probably lose slowly and no one would ever be the wiser when I started getting thinner and that has been the case. People who haven't seen me in a year, don't even recognize me. I changed my hair style and that mixed with the smaller body really throws them.

I'm sorry your friends are not being more supportive....hopefully they'll come around when you are healthier and happier! Good Luck

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
