Addicted To Sweets! Help!

Recommended Posts

I have urges to eat a lot of food like I used to and since I can't due to my band, I eat sweets or Desserts. Because of the high sugar content, I'm able to full-fill that urge to eat. Problem is, I'm gaining weight and being depressed in the process. It's easy to say don't eat those things, but hard to do. I have stretched my pouch 3 times too! Anyone has any wisdom or help for me?

Possibly redirect your attention, journal why you are depressed or why want to eat. Then drink a lot of Water. You may need to seek therapy for the emotional eating. best of luck to you.

It's not easy, but you can retrain your body to "crave" new things. I was a major sweets addict. I could sit and eat a bag of Reeses Miniatures in one sitting, or a 3 hostess cupcakes, or multiple pieces of pie. Very often I'd even wake up in the middle of the night to eat junk food.

The first couple weeks were very hard, but I handled it just like I would any other addiction, I had to quit. I cleared my house of all treats. I didn't go in a convenience store or gas station because those were major impulse buy spots for me. I didn't grocery shop alone so I couldn't sneak a treat there either. I stopped eating not only treats, but bleached white breads and pastas, too because they can trigger the same addictive trigger. I only bought whole grain breads and Pasta.

Over the weeks, I felt better eating healthier. Slowly I found myself "craving" other things. This will be shocking but I started craving salads with fat free ranch dressing. When I get a sweet tooth now, I have an golden delicious apple. My body adjusted and changed what it wanted.

I did have a Reeses Egg on Easter- and was immediately full and felt a little icky. It's weird but now if I eat sweets, they make me feel horrible. I don't mind because it makes it just that much easier to stay away from them.

This is how I kicked my sweets addiction. You may even want to consider a counselor to help you better deal with your emotions. (I'm a huge emotional eater, too)

Best wishes.

I found that I had to "detox" from sugar after surgery because I was so addicted. Eating several candy bars a day, or a few bowls of sugary Cereal was nothing for me. I stuck to my post op diet religiously and once the sugar worked its way out of my system, the cravings were much better. I still eat sweets, but nowhere near the volume and frequency I used to. I find that if I tell myself I can't have something, the desire for it becomes much stronger. So if I really want something sweet, I'll have a small piece and that's usually good enough. Although when I'm PMSing, all bets are off, so keep the chocolate away from me!

Sugar is such a horrible problem. It takes several weeks to break the habit. try not to look past an hour at a time, then make it grow to a day, to a week, to a month. we sabotage ourselves by looking too far ahead. I had fought this battle so many times but I am not ready to give in to it.

check out this link, maybe it will help.

Thank you all. Just to know that I'm not alone is such a comfort to me. I go tomorrow to get a band adjustment, but I have a feeling that I have stretched my pouch. Just had my second baby and this happened after my first pregnancy as well.

Im turning to fresh fruit for my sweet cravings .... seedless grapes, bananas, pears, they are very good.

Even sugar free pudding or VitaTops .... they have both Protein and Fiber. I also have some Protein pudding that I mix with cold Water when Im at work. 12g protein and they are chocolate, vanilla, and cheesecake flavored .... it hits the spot.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
