Post Op Pantry

Recommended Posts

This topic may already be on here somewhere, but I don't really have any inclination to look...I am getting "banned" next week and this weekend I wanted to make sure my pantry had all the post-op stuff I needed to get through the next couple weeks. Please tell me what items helped you through post-op...I have heard lots about popsicles, broth, and creamy soups....anything else??? My dr. told me that he "allows" a slightly higher calorie content the first week becuase of all the liquid...so I'm thinking that it may be more fun to have something that's more tasty than just a couple sips of canned chicken broth. All suggestions welcome!!!!

Here is a list I started pre-op. But maybe it will help. If you want a printable copy inbox me your email address and I'll send it to you.

General Items to Have on Hand

Digital scale

Blender (consider the ones that you can blend using a travel mug) I bought this one at Walmart for $79 http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find&_ta=1&search_query=ninja%20kitchen%20system%20pulse&_tt=ninja

Peewee Pillow pet-to hold against your stomach when you cough

Chewable Calcium

Chewable Daily Vitamin

Gas X

Liquid Tylenol

Benefiber (I mix this with the kellog’s Protein mix below) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Benefiber-Kiwi-Strawberry-Flavored-Fiber-Drink-Mix-Stick-Packs-24ct/17325206

Metamucil Clean and Clear

Milk of Magnesia (MOM)-to help with constipation

Papaya Enzymes- to help later when if you were to experience a “stuck” episode

Stage 1 Clear liquids

Protein Power: This is just going to be trail an error. Looks like the most popular are (powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, Jay Robin, Premiere, NewWhey

Canned chicken broth (the night before your surgery, consider simmering it with some veggies like carrots, onions, potatoes, even some of your favorite herbs. I would leave all the veggies in the broth until the next day. Then have someone strain them off, saving the broth for you)

Favorite Soups Consider lower salt versions(use the larger size cans of Soup if they make them in your band. Then mix a couple of cans of chicken or beef broth with your favorite Soup. simmer and strain)

SF Jello (both premade for convenience and boxed for when you feel like making it)

SF Popsicles

Pedialyte Popsicles

Kellogs Water ready Protein mix (link below)

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Special-K2O-Strawberry-Kiwi-Protein-Water-Mix-4.7-oz-10ct/10891803

SF Water Flavors (Crystal Light, Great Value, Etc)

Gatorade G2 or Propell

Hebal Tea

Diet fruit Juices

NSA-Carnation Instant Breakfast Mix

Skim Milk

SF syrups to flavor shakes

Stage 1-Full liquid -All of the above+

Cream Soups (thinned with water or skim milk)

(consider sprinkling ½ scoop of unflavored protein power into soup and blend…watch the temp of the soup….the protein power may clump at high temps.)

SF pudding (premixed for convenience and boxed for later)

Yogurt (thinned out) (light or Greek) blend well

Baby Foods (add a jar of baby food fruit with your Protein powder and thin with water or skim milk)

Stage 2-Puree

Egg Substitute

oatmeal (thinned)

Grits (thinned)

Applesauce other Fruit sauces

Canned Fruit- juice packed

Instant Mashed

Cottage cheese

Stage 3-Mushies

Canned Tuna

Canned Chicken

Ground Beef in a sauce

Real mashed potatoes

Mashed sweet potatoes

Mac And cheese (consider using the Unjury protein cheese sauce)

Cooked spinach

Cooked and mashed cauliflower

Mashed green Beans

Hmm, so you want someone else to waste their time writing you a post of what to get when you could easily search the forum and find one of the hundreds available? That's pretty ridiculious. Thanks for being honest, I guess.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
