Oh good, I was worried that they would have to stick me a bunch of times to find where they fill it. :)

It usually goes pretty quickly. I had mine under fluro yesterday.

I also learned yesterday that they have to use special needles for the lap band. They are a lot thinner and such than regular needles. The regular needles can harm the port.

Everyone is different, I was stuck 3 times not to scare you. The needle is thin but long enough to get to port. I do admit after first stick anxiety set in, after 2nd stick I was gettiing mad 3rd attempt was done under xray thank God. I believe I would have not been able to take another stick. Praying they get you on first try. Good luck hope all goes well.

I got my 1st fill this morning with my Doc. He answered some questions I had about my medications and exercise and whatnot. He told me that to optimize my weight loss I need to eat about 1000 calories a day. I told him that I was eating 1200-1400 now.

He also did confirm that we need to be on a liquid diet for 2 days after the fill. You should have an empty stomach when you come for a fill, so don’t eat about 2 hrs prior to your fill appt. he also said don’t schedule a fill before any events like parties or trips out of town bc of the liquid diet that follows.

He felt the right side of my stomach and used an alcohol swab to clean the area. He used a tiny needle to giving me the numbing medicine near my port site. It was a tiny pinch. He then prepped the needle for the fill. It was a pretty long needle so as soon as I saw it I looked the other way. He told me it was “only 2 inches long” but it looked like it was longer than that. he went in to do the fill and he found the port like immediately. So was minimal pain, I just felt the needle going in my skin, and I felt it going in my port (like I felt some pressure against something hard). It was over in a matter of seconds.

He told me that I needed to sit in the waiting room and drink Water to make sure the fill wasn’t too tight. If you cant keep down Water they will remove some liquid. He also told me that I can come back for fills every 7-10 days if I’m still eating more than 1000 calories or I’m feeling hungry. He told me not to wait to schedule a fill.

So that’s my story J

Thank you so much for the info...I got to work today and started cramping really really bad at the port site. I have no idea why, the only thing I've done different is run up and down my stairs yesterday instead of walking on the treadmill. I can hardly walk or stand up straight. I have a funny feeling they won't do a fill if I'm cramping like this.

totally talk to the doc about it, and tell them about your exercise. they doc may just examine you and see what's going on in there.

I'm so stupid for changing it up. I was so excited for today. I really want to get a fill, I really need some more restriction. But I feel so stupid walking around the office cuz I can't even stand up straight. I'm able to sit at my desk, just so long as I'm leaning forward.

I had my first fill today also. I was so nervous, I was shaking, and my blood pressure was sky high. My dr was so calming. He just had me lay down, put, my arms above my head, close my eyes, and take a few deep breaths. I felt him feeling around for my port, then a little pressure, and it was over. EASY!!!

Had my first fill Tuesday-really super restricted...food feels stuck going down. Terribly loud gurgling sounds when I drink or even chew gum. Not fun. PB'd vegetable Soup today at work. Seems better at night. Any ideas? Did I eat too big of bites (I know the quantity was OK, I only got 5-6 tiny bites in), or is this soup something I won't be able to eat? Doc put 2cc in a 10 cc band. Tonight I was able to eat Chick-fil-A tortilla chicken soup without incident. Good news is that I lost exactly 20 lbs in 6 weeks since surgery with out much effort. Thanks y'all! I appreciate any advice~

Hi Bobbi

I have no experiences to share with you as my surgery is Monday but these bites you're taking are you really chewing the food up fine? All the pre-op classes and meetings I have attended all I heard was chew, chew and chew..LOL It is now embedded in my brain.

I also heard that most Docs have their patients do a liquid diet for 48hrs or more after a fill to give the stomach/band time to adjust to the change.

Good Luck, Jim

My dr does not do a liquid period after a fill. He says it can take up to a week for the fill to have any effect so why put urself thru that all liquid phase for nothing

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
