Confused At How I Feel After My Fill

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill March 7th. Felt a little restriction. I was still able to eat more than I would expect. This last two weeks, I keep feeling like the food is getting stuck more than previously. I read on the forum, that feeling is when you know you are full. I dont think this is true in my case as this happens alot on the very first bite. I still feel hungry but have to stop eating because the food is not going down. Once the feeling passes, then I can resume eating. In the last 2 weeks I have also been regurgitating alot more when I eat. Again, once it passes, I feel ok and can continue to try and eat. The other dilema I am having is that I havent really lost any weight since the fill, maybe 2-4lbs. I want another fill but I dont know if this is normal or should I get another fill. Can anyone please advise if they are in/or had a similar situation?

My dad had the lap band almost 2 years ago, he said he never felt like me and that I must be doing something wrong. I know there are times when I need to eat more slowly. I have a difficult time with that when I am dealing with my 2 little kids, trying to get them to eat, be quite, sit still, etc. all while trying to eat my food.

What you're feeling is what we call "first bite syndrome"...when the first bite tries to kill you. Not everyone has is but I know a lot who do. Plan your first bite and just protein...small bite, chew really well and then put the fork down and walk away for a few minutes. Its normal to have 4-5 fills before you really get to restriction. Even with the first fill your band could be tighter in the mornings than any other time of day.

Thanks, I will try that. I do notice that if I dont eat yogurt or have a shake in the morning and just go straight to lunch, the feeling is much worse and I cant keep the food down. I think then I am just to hungry and try to eat to fast.

BTW for my first fill I am at 5cc in a 10cc band. I am surprised I am still hungry!

Thats a pretty aggressive first fill but you might need just another 1/2 to 1 cc. But throwing up isn't a normal part of the band. So, pay real close attention to what you're eating and when...and make time to chew really well. Eating in a hurry gets me EVERY time and I'm 18 months out.

When I have that first bite problem, I drink something hot first thing in the morning and then wait about 30 minutes or 1 hour then i can eat yogurt, oatmeal. Try something soft. Then by lunchtime I can eat, but i will eat small bites and chew chew. By dinnertime I am good to go. My Dr. told me we are tight in the a.m. I guess from our band relaxing during the night. Good luck to you.

My surgeon also told me that when we wake up in the morning our tummy has saliva in it from sleeping. So for me, i have to drink coffee or something hot to wash the saliva down. I am super tight in the morning. Even coffee fills me up...but I drink about 24 oz every morning.

Thanks for the help. I am trying to make sure and start slow in the morning. By lunch, I am doing better. I think I will still go in for my scheduled fill next week.

This has been happening to me also, but only after a fill. Today is the first day I'm back to a regular diet after my fill on Monday and I fixed some egg beaters with cheese this morning for Breakfast and the first 2 bites caused a stuck feeling that took forever to pass. I didn't regurgitate, but it was uncomfortable for a good 30 minutes after those bites. I then drank some hot coffee and tried to resume my meal, got stuck again so I stopped. Just now, I tried eating a wedge of cheese (mini Babybel), took 2 small bites and felt that feeling again. It's very frustrating. I'm eating the right foods and I'm starving, but I can't get the food to go down. I only have a little of 3cc's in my band so I can't be too tight. And it only does this on certain days. Other days, I eat just fine all day without any stuck episode.

I am still having issues. I still believe it is that I need to slow down. This is a hard thing for me as I am use to eating fast, trying to eat my meal while it is hot and feed the kids. It will take time for me to learn. Part of me believes it is also mental. I want to keep eating, I need to listen to my body, maybe I am full.

I have a similar problem and I don't know what to do. I have 6.25 CCs in my 10cc band and it hurts with every bite beginning to end. I learned about this 'have a hot drink first' and it helps me in the morning with Breakfast, but in the evening when if i have Soup before my meal I end up eating more than I should and my appetite is quite big for the rest of the evening and night and I find myself getting tempted by everything! But if I have no Soup then I can only eat like yogurt. I need a middle ground :(

It is kind of shocking to see how people differ with the amount in their band and how often they go for fills..

Yep first bite syndrome here too. I learned from this site that apparently the empty pouch tenses up when it first gets food so the first three or so bites need to be extra small and chewed to smitherines.....and it works. I was having this occur with my last 2 fills till I read that and started getting it right. Now I have not been seriously stuck or thrown up in 2 weeks or so. I can eat about 3/4 cup of food at a meal. My band is actually tighter in the evening which seems 2 b backward from most although that changed after the first 6 mos when it was tight in the am....weird

I do great until I sit down and eat with someone..I try to keep up with them and then I am sorry..I am also left sitting at the table alone, eating cold food...My son suggested that I put only half of what I plan on eating on my plate and heat up the rest when the other is gone. ( basically heat back up in the microwave) Then I will have warm food. When I am alone , I use my phone as a discraction or the TV ...everything against what we teach our kids..But in between bites it helps to surf or gaze at the tube, it slows me down. I think that now a days we are all in such a hurry and that leads to "situations" for Lapers !

No more eating on the run !

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
