First, I'm not a dude. Second, I'm not, and never have been, an alcoholic. Although some here sure seem to be. I've only ever been a very casual social drinker. Alcohol is NOT the center of my life. Nor will it ever be.

Do you honestly think it's a good idea to tell a brand new bander (This person was three days post op when she posted.) how to sneak in as many alcohol calories into her diet as possible? At three days post op you should be concentrating on healing and setting up good habits for the future. You act like I'm so anti alcohol. I'm not. But no, I don't think a person three days post op should be drinking. I'm an RN, alcohol that soon after surgery IS NOT good for you. But if you can't give it up long enough to heal it's not my problem.

The truth is alcohol should not be a majority of your diet. Period. And giving new banders ideas at how to sneak in MORE alcohol is not good. Justify it anyway you want but it's not.

Is it a box of sangeria? I might not be able to spell it but I do love to drink it. Can I join?Dr Oz website has a recipe for healthier version, which is pretty good.

I don't think anyone said alcohol should be a major part of diet and I don't think anyone else did unless in jest. Like I have said this topic comes up so many times and its always the same argument. There will always be two sides: those who say that yes I do enjoy some alcohol in moderation and those who say how unhealthy and how far it will set you back.

Listen I am not an alcoholic but I do enjoy doing to a club, bar or simply staying at my house enjoying a couple drinks with friends. I do thinks I would never have done had I not lost this weight.

Again I would like to state to the op you need to talk to your surgeon about this and be truthful to them. Everyone has a vice, well at least the fun ones. Lol

When I talked to my surgeon about my drinking habits , he said that most people will be that honest. He said wait at least a month to heal. Your surgeon will probably say something different due to them using a different technique. He actually laughed when I told him and said well don't we all enjoy some drinks now and then.

I am the one that asked the initial question and I was 4 weeks post op when I hosted the bridal shower. I had 2 glasses of wine that night, had lots of fun, and no issues! No weight gain or stomach issues. I only drink socially with my girlfriends once a month. If I thought I had to give that up to lose weight that would be nuts!

No worries I just didn't want anyone to think I was drinking 3 days post op! I was on pain meds then! I don't know how anyone could!

There's a video of my surgeon (who's also had the lap band surgery) talking about how he likes to have a couple of drinks every day. Towards the end he talks about how he could lose probably 10lbs more if he were to cut out the couple of drinks he has a night.. But that those drinks are good from a cardiovascular and pleasure point of view.

Um actually you'd be surprised. There was another poster three days post op that went out drinking and eating chicken wings. I truly don't know why some people even bother having this surgery.

Actually Sasha, for every world famous doctor that says drinking is good there is one that says drinking is bad. So, don't put everything you believe in on one doctor.

You need to be upfront with your Dr about alcohol use. I had turned 21 a couple months before so I told him plan on drinking once in a while. After all the reason I got the band was I could live a fun and more enjoyable life. Listen to your drs suggest about when you can start. Remember alcohol is empty calories but I always say they are damn good empty calories. Also remember since your losing weight and eating less you are going to be more of a lightweight. Also you should search the forum cause this topic has come up before' date=' so you can get more input.[/quote']

Totally second the lightweight thing. Go slow at first. You might be surprised how little it takes.

You seriously need to relax. You are the classic "extremism person" who probably exhibits this behavior in other areas of life. "All or nothing" as you say philosophy in one of your posts. In studying behavior, you are probably are a choleric personality type who tends to control things.

Heck...you didn't either bother to verify that the original poster was 4 weeks post op instead of the 3 days. In moderation alcohol is fine...so please don't act like its not and treat people like they are second class citizens if they do.

Yes...we all need to be careful (especially during the healing phase) but to be LEGALISTIC on alcohol (in moderation) is clearly wrong from a common sense point of view and medical point of view. I know you said you are fine with alcohol...but the words and spirit (in your posts) clearly says otherwise.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
