Second Sequential Screening In Pregancy

Recommended Posts

Hi all...I am 7 months pregnant..banded Aug 2010---lost about 60lbs before getting pregnant. Had all my Fluid removed when I found out because I was very tight and could not eat and had morning sickness. Surgeon suggested removing all Fluid to avoid slippage...

Gained 13 lbs so far...maintain my diet with the removal of artifical sweetners and Protein shakes...due to contents in the products.

Just wanted to share something my OB told me ...at 17 weeks I had my 2nd seq screening done -and it came back 1/5 chance of downs. Granted I am 37 so I knew my number wasn't going to be super high....but this was so low.

Anyhow proceeded with Amino and results were baby is fine.

My OB told me that she has no real scientific data to show just an observation that patients with weight loss surgery tend to come back with screwy numbers. I know when I was in this trial of waiting for the results it was my only hope...so just wanted to share with others. Any questions please feel free to ask.

Good Luck to all!!

I was 39 when I had my twins and my numbers were all screwy... Dr said it was because I was having twins... Both my little ones are great... My son does have apraxia (problem with speech) but is very slight and my daughter is a baby genius... I decided against the amino because I knew I was having them no matter what... I am sure your baby is fine and who knows if my numbers had anything to do with the band.

My numbers came back at 1:9500 for downs and I've been banded since May 2009 so I doubt that information

Mnjhowell...while you may be right and you were very lucky to have have had such great results...for someone going through the trial of having such low numbers it can be very upsetting.

My post clearly states it was an observation from a medical professional...not my opinion...you can doubt it ..but keep in mind...just wanted to provide some support for a person who might be experiencing the same problem.

I am a medical professional and I am honestly perturbed by other medical professionals blaming things on the band. There is no way that the band could alter your labs for downs. For the medical "professional" to say that was immature, unprofessional, and causing undue stress. Most low numbers for downs are usually human error when the venipuncture was done or the lab test itself was run.

I declined any and all testing because I honestly dont care and besides, what could I do to fix any problems. ALL medical professionals say things that "other" professionals dont agree with. I have had so many friends given low numbers in the last few years and not 1 has had any issues. I do think that at the height of weight loss, our blood work can come out wacky. I do agree with that 100%. It didnt seem your Dr was "blaming" the band but offering an explanation on why the blood work came in weird but your amnio was fine. I honestly dont agree with being pushed to have the tests. But again that is my personal opinion.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
