Shortness Of Breath While Eating?

Recommended Posts

For the past few days I have been noticing that I feel short of breath while eating, like I have to yawn really deeply to get enough air. This has happened in the past but it went away, so I thought nothing of it. My band has also been feeling tighter, especially in the morning, so I wonder if that has something to do with it? It's a little disconcerting but I don't feel lightheaded or dizzy or anything. It's also annoying because if I eat less than an hour before going to the gym, I have trouble catching my breath while doing cardio. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be running to my surgeon's office?

Could be your full signal but would check with your reg or lb dr to make sure since it can be sign of many things

Agree...as soon as you feel that shortness of breath or need the yawn/sigh...you are done eating. Also you should never work out within an hour of a meal and maybe longer now that you are banded because it takes longer for food to move on.

When I get short of breath or feel like I am having trouble swallowing I know it is time to stop eating.

My full signal is usually a hiccup or a sigh, I guess maybe it's SOB when the band tightens. It's near my TOM, but usually the opposite happens...it's like I don't have a band at all! If it doesn't go away by Monday I'll go see the surgeon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
