Positive Home Pregnancy Test.... Yikes!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi All. I am new to the sight. I came here looking for reassurance that all will be okay since I just found out today that I am pregnant. I can't believe it. After reading some of the other posts, I now realize that although my weight loss hasn't been spectacular since my LapBand surgery Sep 29, 2011, perhaps it WAS enough to affect my hormones which possibly made me fertile. I truly thought my baby making days were done. I am turning 46 on Feb 12th and have four children ages 17, 14, 5 and my baby will be 3 Apr 22nd.

Wow! This is a lot to swallow. My surgeon is going to have a fit! He made me sign a contract that I wouldn't get pregnant during the 1st year...yikes! Now what? Is he going to throw me out of the practice or what? Well, if anyone has anything encouraging to say to me, I'd be happy to hear it. I've had two fills bringing me up to 6cc's. I'm sure I will need to be de-flated as I have trouble eating healthy food since my 2nd fill. Today I couldn't eat anything without getting that terrible pain in my chest and the feeling like I'd rather puke. I'm afraid I won't be able to sustain a healthy diet for my baby. I really think I jinxed myself... I started giving my baby stuff away. Damn! I knew I should've held on to that stuff...grrr...

Good night to all....

Wendy

Well, I am going to say Congratulations! I know the timing isn't exactly "perfect", but when is it ever?? I think you should call your surgeon's office and be quite truthful - you thought those days were over, you're 4 months post-op and need a partial unfill due to a positive pregnancy test. Or you could see how things go for these first 3 months and then see how things are going before having a complete unfill. That 1st trimester can change a lot - your body could adapt to the band AND the baby. Please smile and see what a blessing this could be - and no matter what, you have made a positive impact on your life by getting the band. Congrats and please let us know how its going!

Thank you for your encouragement. I'm still blown away by the news. I have an appointment to see my surgeon on March 6th. I'd like to hold out till then and see what develops. Between yesterday and today, I'm suddenly having a very hard time eating anything. Even liquid is a struggle. I read somewhere that someone else said this happened to them. Where they got pregnant and their band suddenly tightened. What could make that happen? It makes no sense to me. I won't be able to sustain a healthy diet like this. I drank a Protein shake for Breakfast and am now trying to eat some potato-bacon-cheddar Soup....it's a struggle even getting this down. I don't understand the change all of a sudden. One day I'm eating ok (still have to watch no to over-eat) the next.... can barely tolerate liquids.

Again, thanx for the response. Have a great day!

Wendy

Congratulations! I was banded June 9th, 2011 before I could get a fill (moved away from surgeon due to transferring properties at work) I was seeking another surgeon when I thought I had the "flu". Wouldn't you know I was pregnant with our first. I'm 6 months along now and doing the math, yeah, didn't take long after the band to get pregnant. I always struggled with irregular periods and as soon as the band was in place, I was monthly. My surgeon said the band does play with your hormones.

It's my Lap-Band baby :-)

I wasn't sure I would be able to have children and though I never really have yet to have a chance to utilize my band, I'm very thankful and will continue my journey after the baby is born. I'm a high risk pregnancy due to blood clots and my specialist was concerned with me losing too much weight, I quickly lost 10 lbs as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I have stopped my strict diet to make sure I'm not losing a bunch of weight which would effect the babys growth.

As for your doctor making you sign a contract about getting pregnant, I think that is nuts. They don't want you to have to halt your progress like myself but you have something bigger to worry about at the moment. I hope you make it to your appointment in March but don't be afraid to go in and get some Fluid out.

Best of luck!

Congratulations! I am in complete agreement with the first reply. You are going to do great as long as you listen to your body and band. I just delivered my son on 1/29 and everything about him is perfect! Losing weight can now be my focus again, before it was about a healthy pregnancy.

Good luck!!!

Thank you for the responses :) I am settling in to my new condition...lol. I can't stress enough how shocked I was. So, I made the appt yesterday to see my ob/gyn. Now it's official. I'm glad to hear that other women are having safe pregnancies with the band in place. I guess if my surgeon doesn't like it, then I'll have to go to another surgeon. Luckily, I am in an area where I have choices. He should be grateful for my business. However, he's rather cocky. He tells me that he trained the other surgeons in our area. Which may be true. Nonetheless, my mother-in-law says her surgeon is very nice and she is happy with her experience with him. So that is an alternative. I'm pretty sure that no one is going to want to be involved with ANY weight loss efforts while I am pregnant and neither am I. I'm just worried about the band moving or becoming displaced with the baby pushing on it later on.

Have a nice day ... :) Wendy

I'm glad to have found people I can relate to. I had my surgery in July 2011. I was not prepared for my Christmas gift. I found out I was pregnant in December. I'm 12 weeks 3 days. My band feels a little tighter and I have to be careful to chew very good. Thank God I don't have any morning sickness. I have had three ultrasounds. The last one showed a very busy little baby. The doctor said the baby was doing well.

I didn't have to sign a contract. My doctor told us that 90% of their patients that want to get pregnant, do so the first year. We just didn't think we would be a part of that group. But here we are. This is the first child for my husband and I. I pray everyday for a healthy baby and a safe pregnancy. I'm happy for everyone and wish everyone the best in their pregnancy journey. I hope we can share more stories with each other.

I am still having a very hard time eating. I've lost 8lb since my doctor visit last Thurs with my chronic pain doctor. Every morning I'm waking up to a lighter me :) Why didn't this happen BEFORE I got pregnant. I was struggling with weight loss before that. I had only lost 19lbs post surgery. Weird, very weird. Anyway, it's good to hear that others are doing well with the band and baby. I need a healthy baby as do all of you :) Stay in touch...Wendy

Well, I just wanted to give an update to my situation. I had a miscarriage last weekend. I was just under 8wks prego. Of course my husband is blaming the band, however I've had two other miscarriages in my lifetime (I just turned 46) - I've also had four live births. So only God knows. I gave the doctor's office the baby and they are going to send it to the lab. I guess they'll be able to tell me something. I meet with the OB next Friday. I am still having a lot of trouble eating. My hubby thinks I should up my appointment with the bariatric doc (not due to see him till Mar 6th). Lots of luck to all of you. I wish you all the best in your pregnancies. Take care... Wendy

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
