Feeling Extremely Tired And Light Headed From Pre-Op Diet.

Recommended Posts

I'm sure many of you have felt this way before you had your surgery, but since I started a pretty much liquid diet of Soups, Protein Shakes and yogurt, I have been consuming around 700-850 calories a day. I am now extremely exhausted and at times feel light headed, more than likely from the huge drop in food intake I'm sure. Any advise how to get through the next few days till surgery. I also work and go to school and am afraid that this may be a huge problem after surgery. Especially with my classes, I need plenty of energy and brain power to get through my classes.

I had the same problem. I felt simply awful and malnourished.

My only advice is to make sure you're taking a good multi-Vitamin to help make up the difference. Also, you may want to consider a Breakfast drink like Carnation sugar free. It not only has some Protein but other necessary nutrients as well.

I know it's rough but I promise it's worth it. I just had surgery on Jan. 6, and 2 weeks post surgery I've already lost almost 35 pounds. That is in big part to the pre-op diet.

Best wishes to you!

I don't have any advice except to make sure that you are spacing things out evenly. I never felt better than a few days after I started liquids. The first 3 days were bad, but after that, I felt great.

I second spreading out your calorie intake so you are eating every few hours. If it makes you feel any better my surgeon wanted me to do 500 calories for several MONTHS per surgery. I made it 5 days. I went on my own diet and lost 50 pounds presurgery.

My doctor's focus is low carb -- he's never even mentioned what my caloric intake should be. I am six days post op and I had the doctor paged yesterday because I was so weak and light-headed I was certain something must be wrong. He told me to go to the ER and I spent all day there yesterday undergoing tests for a blood clot or a bleed, only to be given a clean bill of health.

When I got home last night, I ate what I wanted instead of what I was supposed to. I had one slice of thin crust pizza. I wasn't any more full than I would have been if I had eaten the tuna that I was supposed to have, but I did feel better later in the evening and I have felt some better this morning after an egg and a piece of whole wheat toast. I just think my body was reacting negatively to the extremely low amount of carbs I have been consuming.

From now on, dispite my doctor's wishes, I think I'm going to follow more of a Weight Watchers eating style than an Atkins diet. I'll still focus on the Protein, but not strictly the low carb. I don't want to ever feel as bad as I did the last two or three days!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
