Suggestion If You've Never Had Lap Band Surgery Before...

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone!

I've seen several posters mention having horrible nausea after surgery and wanted to mention this...

My first major surgery was having 60% of my thyroid taken out. The anesthesiologist never mentioned to me that morphine & other drugs they use to make you go to sleep will make you nauseous. Here's the kicker: they can prevent it from happening, but only if they administer the anti-nausea meds BEFORE you go under.

Personally, I don't know why every anesthesiologist doesn't just do that for patients who've never had major surgery. The result was me waking up and throwing up repeatedly...right after THROAT SURGERY. Yowch!

So if you've never had surgery, talk to your anesthesiologist before he puts you under and ask about anti-nausea meds. Who wants to throw up after abdominal surgery? I realize our tummies are empty, but still...not fun!

Those meds don't always work though! I get sick through them, so beware! Always tell you anesthesiologist before hand, Also, if you are feeling nauseous after have the nurses wave some alcohol under your nose and use some oxygen. That makes it go away too!

I knew after surgery I feel really nauseated , So I already asked if they can give me something right before I wake .. and they did .

They had to keep giving me something because I felt nauseated all day til the following morning . At one point I did start to get sick, but they got the meds in JUST IN TIME .. ugh just the feeling of my stomach contracting back and forth was hurting where the port is. But the meds stopped it right away . thank god I NEVER got sick.

I actually told them NO PAIN MEDS, because they make you feel really sick too.

So I never took pain meds after surgery.

All is good now !!

They put a scopolamine patch behind my ear before surgery and I did not feel nauseous once. Not sure why all hospitals don't do this. The only side effect I had from it was my vision was not right, After looking at something for more than a few seconds my eyes could not focus. I was going crazy until I realized it was from the patch a bit after I removed it my vision was fine again.

This is one if my biggest worries because I have never had surgery, I don't know how I will react. When my Mon had back surgery a few yrs ago, she was sick the entire day after. But then again, she is really sensitive to meds like vicodin, and I'm not at all. I hope I do ok, I did consider asking for the patch ahead of time, or.possibly discussing my fear with the anesthesiologist at my preop appt

I had the patch as well as maxed out on multiple anti-nausea meds, yet I still came out with major nausea. I had the patch for 3 days, and had a few bouts of nausea the day after surgery still. Some of us are just more prone to nausea, no matter what steps we take to prevent it.

I woke up once during an endoscopy, it didn't hurt or anything but I remember making eye contact with the doctor and him telling the nurse to give me more of something. And I had a rhizotomy in 2007 and they couldn't get me to wake up after, the nurses said I was crying and moaning softly. But I've never felt nauseous... I'm a little scared to have a major surgery, I've never been cut open before. I sure would hate to wake up during that... eek.gif

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
