Pre-Op Diet for everyone?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of postings about the pre-op diet..and some people are on them and some arent...Is it based on how much you weight? I hear a lot of talk about needing to shrink the liver..is this for everyone as well? Just wondering why some are on a preop diet and some arent.

from what i've read, it seems like lower BMI folks don't have to do it, but maybe it also depends on the doctor. i'm having surgery saturday and there is no pre-op diet for me- just nothing after midnight on friday and avoiding alcohol this week. i'm going to do liquids at least one day before, maybe even two, just to sort of let my digestive system rest before the big day.

My surgeon said I only needed to do a 3 day pre-op liquid diet. Thank goodness! I have read on some posts where people were doing up to 2 weeks liquid diet! omg! I think I would die lol

I had a 2 week pre op diet, to shrink the liver & to get as healthy as possible on surgery day. It also preps for the post-op diet (that, by the way, is miserable). Mine was 1 week Clear Liquids, one week any liquids, 1 week mushies, and then finally normal food. Felt like forever! Good luck

My doctor ordered me to be on a 3 week pre-op diet. This Friday, my surgery day, will mark the end of my 3 weeks.

My Daily Menu:

Breakfast: Protein shake

Lunch: Protein Shake

Snack: 1/2 cup Chobani Plain Greek Yogurt (I add a packet of Stevia In the Raw to sweeten it up.)

Dinner: 1 cup of broth based Soup

Water: 64 ounces/day

I was miserable the first week of my diet but my body has adjusted to it so I'm a happy camper. I've lost a total of 21 pounds.

I am on my 2nd day of pre-op diet. I had a ready made Protein Drink yesterday- Myoplex EAS vanilla, it was great and filling. Then some chili for dinner. Today was a homemade Protein Shake, a ready made shake, condensed Soup, light yogurt, and a cup of broth. I haven't snapped and bludgeoned anyone with my blender yet. I do recommend vanilla based Protein Drinks because they can be mixed with more things. Try adding instant coffee for a iced mocha version, diet chocolate Syrup, bananas, a liitle strawberry yogurt, some Peanut Butter and chocolate syrup or orange yogurt and make an orange cream flavor. Get creative, but try to stay low-cal. I'm thinking about this time as a cleanse. Good luck on all pre-op diets!

It's really not all that bad. I had two weeks preop and one week post op of liquids. You can find pre and post op recipes at http://bandipes.blogspot.com

I am currently on day 8 of 21 days of pre-op diet. My doctor explained to me that typically for females he recommends 2 weeks, but as a male weight is typically held around the torso, so I would need 3 week. I'm allowed 2 shakes and One Bar along with 2 cups of vegetables, each day. (800 calories)

I have to say that I am quite jealous of the people that are allowed a little variety in their meals, and those who have no pre-op at all.

For the most part I can't complain as things have been going quite well. I have already lost 15 lbs and I just past the 1/3 mark, hooray!!

Best of luck to all.

I think it depends on the surgeon's preference. I have to do a 2 wk liquid pre-op :) I'm actually looking forward to it because it means I'm getting close. Haha..my attitude may change once I get started.

My doc told me to try to lose 10 pounds but didnt say how...as a lifelong dieter I KNEW how! It continues to amaze me how there really is no standard medical practice regarding anything about this band...every doc has their own way and even the other health professionals (dont get me started about those dieticians) seem to be totally winging it with no general consensus about what's best!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
