Hey guys! So it has been a week since my surgery and I have some questions for everyone... I go to the doctor in one week for a followup appointment to make sure that everything is okay. I have started soft foods as of yesterday and will be on that for a week. Since surgery I had lost 6 pounds, but gained 2 pounds back within the past couple of days. Anyway, here are my questions. Does anyone have issues going to the bathroom? I drink regularly like I should be, sipping something at least every 15 minutes, and I still only very rarely go to the bathroom. Also, I haven't had a bowel movement since before the surgery. I am not sure what is going on or if I should be worried or not. Also, when did you not have pain with your port anymore? I'm still bruised and sore. I know everyone is different, but I was just curious to see if people had some of the same issues.

@EBrown . . . I was banded on the 8th. My incisions (I have 6) are just now starting to itch. However there should be no pain at the sight of the port. Is the skin red and warm to the touch? If so - you could have an infection. If so, call your Dr.

Had a great dinner with family, since I am on mushies I took some white meat, l a little stuffing and some turkey gravy and blended it real well. I had some squash and rutabaga and some mashed potatoes. I didn't eat everything on my plate but was satisfied with what I did eat. I felt good to be able to get up away from the table with food still left on my plate and not be so stuffed that I couldn't move. Then about an hour ago we had pie, I took a small slice of chocolate pie and only ate the pudding. I am so proud of myself! How did everyone do today?

Well I wanted to start exercising again and my Doctor told me to start out slow. So I got the Wii Fit Plus out and did a few routines that I enjoy on there. I did 18 minutes and burned over 80 calories. I know it does not sound like much but it's a start. How is everyone's Saturday going?

I did a little more xmas shopping done and only have 3 gift cards to get and some wrapping and I am done! Yay....

Ok So I have a question I am hoping someone can help me with... I started drinking my Protein supplements this week and as of now I have been drinking 4oz (20g) 2x per day (in between meals) Am I supposed to treat them as a meal and not drink anything an HR before and after? or should I just be using the protein as a once a day Meal Replacement?

What did your Dr. tell you ?

Everyone's Dr. is a little bit different.

So you need to know what was said to you.

Are you a couple weeks from being banded or what ?

Hello November Bansdsters! Well it happened for me on 11-17-11. So I'm 13 days in and I begin mushies tomorrow. Can't wait! Who thought I would be excited over mushies.......lol. I'm so excited over this forum. I've been going back and forth over to have this surgery or not and finally after much research and success from family and friends it happened.

Surgery went well. I don't remember what happened after I moved from the bed to the survey table. But I awoke and my nurse was right there with me. She didn't waste any time getting me up to take the swallow test and to begin walking. I didn't get any medication until after that. I was second that day to have the surgery. I felt some stomach pain and was sleepy but I was home by noon, surgery was at about 8:30AM. So far so good not much pain and not much gas pains either that I was so afraid of. I've been walking and following the diet my doctor recommend closely. I'm excited for this new journey and hope to communicate with fellow newbies like myself.

Hello fellow bandsters - I was banded on 11/9/11, so I'm 3 weeks out today and feel fabulous. If you have an experienced surgeon, you have very little to worry about. I did not have near the pain I was so afraid of, tho I did get some pretty severe shoulder pain from the air they use for a couple of days. I started at 267 and am now 241 in a little over 5 weeks. I'm stuck at this weight for about the last week, but they tell me this is pretty typical until your first fill or two (mine is 12/13). Over the last week, I've been walking two miles a day and have had zero pain since about a week and a half out. My doc doesn't put anything in the band when he implants it, so I'm able to eat more things than they told me I would be able to, and more than they told me, which is where I am now - trying hard to remember why I've done all this. Follow your doctor's orders, if you have a family to feed, make sure your freezer is stocked, and allow yourself at least a week to get your bearings. This has been a walk in the park compared to what I had envisioned beforehand - but I'm also very committed to this new lifestyle. AND PRAYER HELPS IMMENSELY. Blessings to you and your journey :).

Hi November Bansters. I'm five days out since my banding.

The surgery itself was MUCH less scary and painful than I had anticipated. What I did find was the gas/shoulder pain was quite uncomfortable. (I have back issues so it was more intense.)

Over the next couple of days, I found intense pain in the sternum area, and found that it was due to simply over-filling my stomach. Yep - taking big gulps of fluids gave me tummy pain. I found that sipping small amounts avoided the pain completely. So now I have NO pain. I'm just a little tired. I'm not hungry at all. Even preparing small meals for my family doesn't get my appetite going.

I'm really enthused that this was such a good decision. I only wish I hadn't waited so long. Due to my crappy insurance, I had to do a self-pay...and $9995 is A LOT of money for me. But I think it is the best money spent.

Good luck to our December bansters!

Try a Heating Pad for the pain. It might help...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
