Current PAP Smear??

Recommended Posts

For those of you that have been following my other post about the process in getting the lap band,

I was able to make my appointment today to see a surgeon. I see him next week and the receptionist told me that one of the criteria for getting the surgery will be having a current pap smear.. that's all fine and dandy except for the fact that I have/(possibly had) moderate to severe dysplasia. I found out I had it while I was pregnant and then was retested and biopsied after I had my son. In April I had the LEEP procedure done and I am supposed to schedule a follow up pap to see if its gone. Am I not going to be able to get this surgery since I have dysplasia?? I haven't read anything else like that so I was stunned!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Amanda

I didn't need a current PAP!

That seems to be ridiculous. I dont see how one has anything to do with the other. I have never heard of that being a criteria to have surgery. I would fight tooth and nail if they tried to deny me because of that. (I have had dysplasia too in the past and had a LEEP)

My doctor made me get one. He said "It is my experience that if I don't make you do one now it will be a very long time before you ever go back for one."

what? that is ridiculous. pap smears have nothing to do with getting a lapband. I didn't realize the band wen down by the whohaa. lol

anyways, talk to your gyno's office and ask what they do in this circumstance.

I didn't have to show results for pap, mamo ...... nothing ...... I think they are taking it too far asking for that stuff.

I can't believe they are asking for a pap smear!

The thing is.. all he said was a current pap smear, right? He didn't say it had to be normal. Tons of people get abnormal cells on their pap smear. I'm sure it isn't anything to worry about in regards to having your band placed.

When I did a weight loss program some years ago ( Dr Berstein diet), they wouldn't start the B12 Vitamin shots until I had a pap smear and gave them the results.

I have no idea why they wanted it, but they said they just wanted to make sure I was in good health.

When I went for my band, my doctor never asked for me to have a pap. I did however have a bad pap a few months later and finally 1.5 years later I ended up finding out I had dysplasia and just had LEEP done in May.

I have had more surgery since then and am scheduling a boob job soon and my doc (band/plastics) knows about my paps and such ( as he wanted me to switch doctors to his hospital so I wouldn't be going all over the country for things) and it doesn't seem to interfere with anything else......

I think since you had LEEP already you should be fine. I don't understand why you wouldnt be allowed to have the surgery even if you had dysplasia.

They make you get a pap smear just because all medical tests need to be up to date. I had to go thru the same thing which prolonged getting my surgery date and I have mild dysplasia. They just want to make sure you dont have cervial cancer or anything bad. It shouldnt cause you to not get a date because I got mine. Just took longer!! Good luck!

Does your doc ask his male patients to get their prostate checked?? I can see with a history of something getting a clearence from that doctor but to just have someone get one because... Makes no sense to me!

I was not asked about a pap smear or any gynecological updates

Found out that it was because I listed my dysplasia as a medical condition and they want to know that I've had the LEEP to show that I am having it taken care of and I am under a physicians care for it....no biggie!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
