I had my surgery on Monday, August 8. I'm having a hard time differientating my pains. I don't know whether I'm feeling gas, the band, hunger, surger pains, etc. Right now, I have a sharp pain in my chest when I take a deep breath. Is that normal?

And how do I tell if I'm hungry. Does it feel the same? I haven't felt hungry yet I don't think.

That sharp pain is normal. I'm 10 days post of and still have it a little and can't take full deep breaths. But it will get better. My guess is you're probably having all of those pains... I did.

And trust me, you'll know when you're hungry. I get so hungry it hurts.... I feel like a newborn. Haha and it comes in quick too.

Good luck... The first few days suck :-(

I am 15 days post op and I had similar questions. I called my doc office three times in two days because I was worried!! The chest/ribs/lungs/back/shoulder pains are all normal. The back/shoulders on me was from the gas, and I still have stiffness through out the day but it's not painful. My chest and ribs felt like I got hit by a bus for about a week. Even after I went back to work it was strong enough to make me cry. Do not skip your pain meds they will help tremendously, and make sure you use the lung machine they should have sent home with you...I did it 3x and hour for about a week, in the care, at work, on the toilet! haha....it forces you to stretch them which makes the pain go away faster. It will pass, but if you are tired and need to rest DO IT!!! As for the hunger pains, I agree with the last comment. I didnt' feel hunger until I was able to drink about 6 oz an hour and when it came I was so hungry I wanted to vomit. It comes out of nowhere and it's a definite tummy growl like you haven't ate in months! Good luck with everything.

Lung machine? I have no idea what that is.

I didn't have a lung machine either. i hear that some people have to give themselves injections for ten days after surgery. So glad I didn't have to do that either!

The lung machine is just this plastic thing that you breathe in an it measures the output of your lungs. It just makes them strong so to make sure you don't get pneumonia or anything like that.

I had my surgery on August 11..let's talk about this pain.....OMG..it is so similar to what u have mentioned. My clavicle hurts..i've been taking tums and gas x..no improvement. I take my pain medication every 4 hours. My side's HURT..omg it feels like someone is pulling at my fat and muscles..when I deep breath it hurts. They didnt give me an incentive spirometer (lung machine) as you all call it, I wish they did. It hurts to walk sleep lay twist stand and sit. LOL..i'm miserable..Im trying to follow the diet but find myself confused. I dont want to eat because I dont feel hungry and the pain probab;y isnt helping. I'm taking Lortab liquid. Any suggestions to help with the pain..

Thanks for the responses. It definitely helps me not freak out. The pain from deep breathing is better today so be assured that all of the pains will get better. I told my husband yesterday that I was so uncomfortable. Then I remembered I was uncomfortable being fat too so I just shut my mouth. I did get the lung machine. If you don't have one just take deep breaths to the point of coughing to stretch that muscle. I'm sure you will get the same affect. Oh I slept with a heating pad on my shoulder last night. It's nit instant relief but I didn't have shoulder pain today. Try that!

I also had this "pain pump" pumping pain meds internally through a catheter for 48 hours post op. I think they may have helped me a lot. Did anyone else have this? I had to remove the catheter myself which was pretty disgusting but painless.

I didn't have that but I've seen other people have had the pump. I wasn't in enough pain to need medication for 48 hours.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
