Anyone else not required to do a liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon called today to assure me that they are still working with the insurance company and that I should have an approval soon...I asked him when he wanted me to starts my liquid diet and he told me that he doesn't require a preop diet.....

Every story and journey that I have read about on this forum...people talk about the liquid... I prepared myself for it...I even bought the magic bullet, lol ...im not mad just taken by surprise. My surgeon says that he only asks people who are severely over weight to lose?? I thought I was severely overweight...bmi 43?

Well....happy I dont have to but curious, has anyone else been told not to do it? Hmmmm...

My doctor told me if I lost at least 10 pounds before the surgery, he wouldn't make me do the 2 week liquid diet. I lost 14. They still wanted me to do it, but I convinced them I shouldn't have to.

I have lost 25 lbs so far and I start my liquid diet this Thursday (8/11). My band date is 8/25. According to my surgeon and dietician, the reasoning behind the liquid diet is so your liver shrinks and it is easier for them to do the surgery, so there is less of a chance for complications.

Everyone is different, and I would listen to what your surgeon says. Maybe you might want to replace a meal with a Protein shake. It is all up you and your surgeon.

Thanks!

Dawn

My surgeon didn't require a pre-op liquid diet, but made me do a 10day one after surgery. He said he requires men to do the pre-op liquid because they have a lot more fatty tissue around the liver than women do.

I did not have to do the liquid diet either. My BMI was in the 60's :o . My surgeon wanted me to lose some weight (liver shrinkage), but no specific amount. He told me he would not do the surgery if I gained "any" weight. I lost 18 pounds in 2 1/2 months.

Good Luck to you!

Mine does not require a liquid diet before. but does have his patients do a 2 week "fast". which consists of a slim fast in the morning, slim fast for lunch and a lean cuisine or smart one for dinner. you can have Snacks in between meals, such as fruit, yogurt and pudding. I lost 6 lbs doing mine! it is to have your liver shrink some for the surgery, better access to the organs.

My surgeon only required me to go on Clear liquids the day before surgery. But he required me to do three weeks of liquid diet after surgery. I did fine, and have lost plenty since surgery. The weight loss shown in my ticker is counted since my surgery day.

My doctor requires no pre-op diet. My BMI was 48. When I asked him if I should at least try to lose a couple pounds beforehand he said it really didn't matter to him. He never had a problem working around a liver. He's done this surgery over 2000 times and, as far as I know, he has never knicked a liver.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
