Cant keep anything down??

Recommended Posts

Denise, thank you so much for your reply. I tried to have some coffee and again, just a sip or two, so I called. He said it could be gastritis or lots of other things irritating it, making it tighter too...no matter the time out from surgery. He said if I cant get a few quarts down per day then this is where we should start. Whew. He's meeting me at ER to take Fluid out of the band, I feed relieved and I'm glad I called. And glad i posted to get some support and advice. Thank you again. Keep you posted!!

Well I am happy to report things are MUCH BETTER!!!!!! I met the on-call dr in ER and in 5 min was able to drink much easier. Sticking to solids for the next couple days, but he suggested a follow up next week and then if needed, slight refill. He also thought, as opposed to a slip, that it was perhaps a gastritis causing inflammation, thus causing my band to feel that much tighter. ??? I did feel like I had the flu or food poisoning or somthing...who knows. The liquids are going down and I am SOOOOO happy! So relieved to feel like the world is not ending.

Thank you SOO much for your advice and support :)

Glad to hear everything is going well! I have had the same symptoms as you for about a week now. I haven't had a fill in about 4 months and all of sudden, seems like it got tighter. I went back on fluids for a while and all is well now. I had a "stuck episode" one day last week (steak.. big NO NO!) .. and I am pretty sure I irritated my band and it was swollen. At any rate, I am relieved taht things are back to normal now. I am self pay and really cannot afford to have a revision if the need arises... Keep in touch.. Hope all goes well from here on out.. and even with the aggrevation........... WOULD DO IT AGAIN in a heartbeat! My life is soooo much better, even though I am not at goal yet. But I will get there. As some of you said, have had a lot of stress and set backs, but we must keep pressing on. Hope to see "LESS OF YOU" in the near future! God Bless!

It does suck!! To say the LEAST! And it is SCARY as hell! I think (and I work at a hospital every day) I am always in denial that although statistics show complications, they will ever happen to me. Same reason I got squeamish when he stuck that long a@* needle into my port today. AMAZING what ONE CC of Fluid can do!? I don't know if this is the fix, the end, I doubt it. I can't believe how many people say they dont get that slime every day? Makes me feel abnormal...sometimes it is just a bit when it does happen, I think the food goes down but the slime doesnt follow. Has been manageable, and by that I mean, I would NOT live in discomfort every day if that was the case. I knew right away yesterday that someTHING was not right.

If nothing else, this was a wake up call for me. Call me stupid, but I work with drs every day. I waited until it was scarily not right and then I called and I was glad I DID! (just a symptom of taking care of everyone else in your life and assuming YOU will just be ok :) I promise to do better with eating what I SHOULDNT, and the WAY I should. I usually do well but I veer off from time to time. I've developed my own personal system of making it through dinners, lunches, DATES ARE THE WORST! But this definitely got my attention. And got me realizing that thousands of people are out there just like me experiencing the same thing.

Thanks for your support, all :)

I am glad you called! I am going through the exact same thing! It sux! Im 2.5 years out and doc just took ALL my Fluid. He believes I have a slip. I will have an upper GI on Tuesday, to confirm (hopefully deny) this. You did the right thing by calling your doc... I waited for 2 months... I REFUSED to get an unfill, but then I passed out. Dehydration. I was stupid for not calling sooner! Lets us know what your doc says!

Very glad you are feeling better! Gastritis is inflammation (irritation and/or swelling) of the stomach, no matter the cause. So it really doesn't matter if it was from food poisoning, the flu, or getting stuck. Something irritated the heck out of your stomach, enough to swell it up so much that it closed off access to your stomach. A deadly situation if left too long as you cannot get liquids in for hydration. It sounds as though he doesn't think it was a slip, that is great news!

When you go back for your refill talk about the daily slime issues. Maybe try a fill level just a little bit less than you had and see how that goes? Or perhaps he'll tell you it's fine as long as you aren't in pain. For my band slime=stuck=pain. I rarely get slime that I don't have pain and a stuck episode to follow. So my experience is different from yours.

I am so glad you went with your gut and called your doctor yesterday knowing something was not right. (no pun intended!)

No jena, You're not alone. I have always had the "slime" but I don't throw up every day. I walk when I get it and the food will eventually go down. I am glad you are doing better. Keep up the good work!

So today has been really odd for me. One CC gone from my highly restrictive band yesterday, and was able to DRINK finally!!! Today, I am sooooo hungry! Ive had liquids and some yogurt and made a Protein Shake even and, this is a sensation I have NOT HAD IN 3 YEARS...no restriction whatsoever. Everything is just slipping down like nothing! It is like, liberating and extremely scary at the same time. I am scared to death to try anything solid-solid. Should I wait to talk to my dr first? I think I will, but it really is SO odd. Not one day goes by that I dont get at least a little "reminder" restriction, and slime, if I eat too fast, too much. Appropriate food and portions work ok, depending on the content. But other days, my morning coffee takes an hour. Now I'm kinda scared the OTHER way - I've been so trained to eat 3 bites and take the rest to go...such is my life; I feel like I need that fill again before too too long?!?

I wouldn't get in too big a hurry to get more restriction... I went through the same thing a few months back. I had an "unfill" of about .5 cc and could eat anything right after.. but a week later, I found restriction again.... it really is strange.... my band is so fickle, can eat anything one day and nothing the next.. take a little "break" but be careful about over indulging... Good luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
