Lap Band not installed!

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery Monday, the 25th. I woke up around 11:30 to hear the doctor say he couldn't get the device around my stomach, because there was "too much fat" around the stomach. I'm 6'4" 400 lbs. should there have been this problem? He aborted the operation, he said, after 2 hours of "lifting, tugging, turning..." Should I worry abo...ut this? The rep said I need to lose 30 more pounds to try again-total of 50 lbs-that's 25% of my weightloss goal! I'll only have 150 lbs left--will I even want to do it then...shees, I woke up thinking my road was paved, and marked...now I'm at another crossroad.

I admire you very much, if you can lose what you need to, to have them try again, the band can help you continue on your journey. Remember, after you are done losing, there is maintenance for life.

No reflection on you, but I wonder if you could get a second opinion. It is almost as if this doctor doesn't know as much as he should about the super obese.

I wish you the best and hope you keep us updated on your odyssey (sp).

I'm so sorry about this disappointment. That must have been really frustrating.

I am 5"10 and was about 390 at the time of my surgery. I was on a strict liquid Protein shake diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery that was supposed to reduce fat around the liver and stomach. Did you do something like that? Did the doctor indicate whether this is something that is common?

I know the idea of losing 30 more pounds is frustrating. But you can do it and I know you will be successful!

Man, what a bummer! I'm so sorry to hear about this. As someone else mentioned, you should have been on a very low carb, high Protein diet prior to surgery. Did you stick to the diet if recommended? My doctor mentioned that he had patients before who did not do the diet and he was unable to operate as well. If you give it another shot, and I think you should, I would ask the doctor about the pre-op diet. I wish you all the best!

That is too bad. My brother is a Big Big Boy 6'1" and weighed over 500 pounds. He didn't have a problem. There are different size bands. Wonder it your surgeon had the options available.

I wish you the best. I think you should try again. I just love my band, it has helped me so much.

Good luck to you

I would not go back to him. I would find a new doctor. I just checked out your doctor and found that he has 15 patients registered here. 8 are pre op. Of the 7 that are post op only 1 has had success plus he has only been doing bariatric surgery for about 2 years.

I agree with Cindy. I think you should interview a few more bariatric surgeons. I was nearly your size and a good 7" shorter and only had 1 day of clear liquid before surgery and the surgeon had no issues banding me. Sounds like to me that your surgeon isn't as skilled as he could be.

Congratulations on losing 20lbs already.. Fantastic!! and yes, you will want to lose the rest after you get the first 50 off. Right now you're just disappointed and perhaps a bit depressed that you didn't get banded...

Keep on pushing for your surgery. Find a more skilled and experienced surgeon.

Every person's anatomy is different. I'd rather they not continue the surgery than risk my health trying to force a band where it won't fit.

I don't think judging the surgeon by stats here is necessarily fair. Of the 9 patients who list my surgeon, I am the only only one at a normal BMI. But there is no way to know how many people have drifted off and not updated their status. I am not saying don't get a second opinion, but to say he is a poor surgeon based on that..well...I don't know......

I'm so sorry! I lost weight by pretending I had a lapband already. Wasn't easy but I dropped 27 pounds in 6 weeks before surgery - no all liquid diet, I just ate less. But it sucked being hungry. Try Protein Shakes between smaller meals. It helped me. I will be thinking about you.

I agree. I wasn't implying that he was a poor surgeon based on his profile here. I also checked him out on another website that rates doctors and found that the majority of the surgeries he does are gall bladder and abdominal scar tissue removal. It didn't even mention bariatrics as something he does. Based on that and the fact that he has only been doing lap band since 2009 I would think that he is somewhat inexperienced and think that the OP would have better luck with someone more experienced.

I agree with Cindy and tried to find a way to post similar thoughts without causing trouble. I believe that the super obese do not qualify for the band and the surgeon should have known that. I feel bad for the original poster but I wouldn't keep that surgeon.

I don't agree that the super obese don't qualify for lap band. At 6'4" and 400# his BMI is 48. That is exactly what mine was at the beginning of my journey. I think part of the difference is that my doctor has been doing lap band since 2003 and has done almost 3000 of them.

While a bit of a surprise, were it "me" in that situation, I'd try to use it as opportunity to "live the Bandster lifestyle" and find ways to modify my eating behavior "as if" Banding had in fact occurred.

Exploration of those hidden and often denied behavioral activities relating to our Morbid Obesity have to be accomplished in any event, whether Banded or not, IMHO.

Whoever we choose to do surgery, or get it done at all, is less important in the long run, than finding a way to move our spirit along with our body, ever towards the goal we have.

"Healthy eating habits" is a difficult goal for any Bandster to achieve.

Using the tools we have accumulated is essential in all phases of achieve control of our Belly Beasts. Developing newer and ever-more effective means of accomplishing our goals requires discipline and daily focused effort.

Cheers on your journey.

I am 6ft 4 and 415 at time of surgery. My Dr. ordered a larger band to use and I had no problems. I am sorry to hear that this happened to you! I couldn't imagine going through that. I do know that the Doc had to specially order my band my surgery was even postponed a few days because of it. Maybe your surgeon just asumed he could make due with smaller band?

Yeah but as a woman, you would most likely a) have smaller organs and B) have much more of your fat distrubuted under your skin rather than within your abdomen, no matter whether you are pear or apple shaped. Males have much more intra abdominal fat as a general rule. So with a slightly bigger stomach and liver and more fat packed tightely around and within those organs means you absolutely cant compare one person to another.

To the OP, it will be SO worth still banding if you've "only" got 150lb to lose. This band will help you get ALL of the weight off and it will help you to KEEP it off. I think it does more for me maintenance wise than it did losing to be honest. Stick it out, you can get there. And if you didnt do a liquid diet, I'd be making sure you did one this time, get that liver smaller and out of the way.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
