Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for next week for the banded plication surgery are there any others who have had this procedure done? What was recovery like? Glad you went with the combination surgery?

I am hoping to have that done next month as well! I did find a thread on obesityhelp.com.

Here is the one I am referring to:

Post Date: 4/25/11 4:54 am

here's the link to the video:

https://weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/WhatisBariSurg1.aspx

After you watch it check out their video about the realize band.

Here is some info about the surgery:

https://weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/gastricplication.aspx

Here is the results of a study done about plication:

https://weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/images/file/Articles/ Laparoscopic%20Gastric%20Plication_inpress.pdf

Although this info only talks about plication it really halped me with my decision. I knew that the lap band had been done for several years so that part didn't concern me as much.

Here is another link I found, in the above referenced thread the woman who had it done was very pleased with the results. It is similar to the results from the sleeve initially and you need less fills.

Hello,

I had my Lapband with Gastric plication done on April 11, 2011. I am glad that I did it because I feel that I have had an amazing weightloss thus far. I told my doctor that I need to lose a significant amount of weight but did not want to go the bypass route. so he suggested the Plication.

At first it was hard because the restriction in the beginning is a lot worse than the normal band from what I am told. The first couple weeks I had swelling in my stomach and esophogas because I also had a hietal hernia repair so at times it was hard to keep liquids down. But after that I was fine. I dont regret it, I would do it all over again if I had too.

any other questions, just let me know.

-fefe :D

Why is there a need for both surgeries? I don't understand why one or the other wouldn't be sufficient. Is u have plication, then what is the band doing? The stomach has already been reduced. Someone please educate me on this procedure.

My doctor explained that the Plication will provide immediate weight loss that the band often times does not provide. Having the plication should reduce the number of needed fills. In addition, he said that having the plication done should actually greatly reduce the risk of band slippage. I believe that they are actually seeing immediate weight loss with this surgery comparable to Gastric Bypass.

Also, if I may add, the plication is not the typical plication for the sleeve it is modified. It does not involve staples only stitches, so eventually they will become undone and your stomach will go back to "normal". This is when the band begins to play an active role. For me I have severe back pain and can't even walk without having to take medicine, it will help me to lose a significant amount of weight quickly and reduce the load and stress on my back, relieve the pain so I can begin exercising.

Thanks for the answer to my question. I am not familiar with plication at all. Best of luck to you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
