Exercise with Peripheral Neuropathy?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have Peripheral Neuropathy and exercise? Been trying to figure out the best exercises with this. I have extreme back and leg pain after exercising and was curious if anyone had found a good exercise routine for this? My doctors tell me to keep trying and to do yoga but so far we haven't figured out a good thing to do. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks! I've been walking but after I walk 2 or 3 days I have a lot of pain and can't walk for 4 or 5 days. I have another appointment soon so I'll just keep trying. Thanks again!

I wonder if aquatic exercises wouldn't benefit you. Drastically decreased impact on your joints, and increased resistance under Water would make sure it's a good workout routine for ya.

Are you taking any meds for your neuropathic pain? Vicodin/Lortab does wonders for me.

Yes, and starting in the pool always is the best thing for me. I eventually want more (I have started walking 2 miles a day and lifting weights) but it is always my starting point. I have been doing Water aerobics for 6 months and I must say I notice a HUGE difference in my neuropathy now. My legs used to ache at night but now I have some relief. I think it may be a combo of excercise and weight loss. Good luck finding what works for you! I will say I haven't been taking anything other than Tylenol at night now and that is a major accomplishment for me.

I was wondering about the pool myself. We don't have a pool and the county has closed down the pools where I live due to budget cuts :( Maybe I can get my hubby to buy me a pool! I take Neurotin every night. I'm supposed to take 1600 mg a day but I don't do that..heck I have to be awake sometime! lol I take 2 neurotin at night and try not to ever take anymore than that although sometimes I do have to take 1 during the day for my back pain. I'm wondering about changing to Lyrica to see if that helps. I'll have to ask my doctor. Thanks for the pool suggestion, I'll work on my hubby :)

Thanks for the suggestion about aquatic exercises. I'm going to try to sweet talk the hubby into buying me a pool. Our county closed down all the public pools due to budget cuts so I'd have to get one. Maybe an above ground one wouldn't be too bad, I'll check into that.

I take Neurotin 300 mg. I'm supposed to take 5 a day but I just can't do that. They make me so sleepy, I'm really susceptible to anything that makes you sleepy. I have Lortab but try not to take them at all. I usually take 2 Neurotin at bedtime but occasionally I have to take an extra one during the day.

Thanks again!

Missy,

I take Lyrica and it has helped me so much. You have to watch your diet but it is well worth it to me. Neurontin got to where all I was doing is gaining weight with no pain relief.

All the best,

Melinda

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
