Next weekend I have an annual girls weekend at the lake. Yes, this includes alcoholic beverages. Maybe a few. Before surgery the only thing I drank was beer. Has anyone had beer post surgery? I'm afraid of the carbonation. Any other beverage options? I'm not a wine drinker.

I'm not a heavy drinker, I can go months between drinks. But I do have a few from time to time on occasions.

For instance:

In June we were on vacation....a Caribbean cruise. I had at least 2 mixed drinks a day.

Last week, the July 4th weekend, we went to a ballgame and I had 3 lite beers throughout the game.

Whenever we go out to dinner I will have a pre-dinner cocktail.

I don't drink anything else carbonated.

Now I'm not saying it is OK to drink while being banded, or when dieting for that matter. I'm not saying carbonated drinks are Ok either.

All I'm saying is what I have done, and have had no personal effects....other than the effects of drinking 3 beers at a ballgame.

I have not been banded yet, but I think this is a good question. I enjoy having a drink every now and then and wonder if that is a problem with having a lap band. Hope others that are banded will respond, so I can get some feedback as well.

Do not try it on an empty tummy. I have beer or a drink occasionly and it can hit home very quickly. It makes me my husbands cheap date, I share his meal and have 1 happy hour drink.

Im not a big drinker either, but there are a few occasions in a year, and this is one. Does drinking the beer do anything to you? Burps? Have you heard leaving it sit out for 30 minutes to lose its fizz? Can it stretch your pouch?

I have been banded over 2 yrs. Never had a problem with the occasional beer. However, the day our son found a job, 1 year after graduating from college; I celebrated. Only problem was...... I had taken a Zoloft, and I hadn't eaten all day. I had 3 chicken wings, and a Raspberry Long Island, boy did I feel good. Then some fool bought me another one because they had never seen me drink. I have been married 33 yrs., and my husband had never seen me drunk. Well, I wan't really drunk, I was sick. It looked a lot like drunk. One drink was where I should have stopped!

Do you like Margaritas? Try the following recipe:

1 oztequila…………. 69 cal

1 oztriple sec………..103 cal

1 ozfresh lime juice… 8 cal

Put all in a shaker with ice and shake, shake, shake! Pour in a half salted margarita glass! Yum, only 180 calories, and no carbonation.

Caution: A little goes a long way! :bananapartyhat:

How about vodka and cranberry? White wine?

I don't think alcohol is conducive to weight loss but this sounds like a special occasion so in moderation should be just fine.

Have a great time!

I have been on the skinny margarita kick. I drink a couple times a month (sometimes more even in the summer with all the bbqs and have had 110lb loss in a year and a half). I have not had any carbonation since being banded except for a glass of champagne for my sisters wedding (it actually bothered my but it was my sisters wedding).

I have also done the Walmart brand sf drink mix. They have margarita line, strawberry daquari, cranberry. You could also do the vodka lemonade.

I am in maintenance mode so I do allow alcohol in my diet. Sometimes beer gives me the hiccups. Usually on the first sip, if it is going to happen. I hate it because it makes me look drunk, even if I am not! ugh!

The main thing to realize is that it is extra calories that provide no nutrition. You need to take that into account. I'd say try a sip or two and see how it goes. The only other alcoholic drinks i like are strawberry margaritas/daquiris and long island iced teas. Both with tons of calories.

Alcohol does not affect us differently the way it does bypassers, because our digestive systems are still intact. But if you haven't consumed as much as you might have in the past, your tolerance may be lower. Just something to keep in mind.

I say enjoy yourself!

I have noticed a lot of restaurants have a "light" menu for alcohol now.

They can make a lighter version of martinis and margaritas. I know juice isn't the best option, but it has not carbonation. I second a vodka and cran. sugar free redbull and vodka?

I think just asking the bartender what they can make that is low cal and no carbonation should give you a few selections. If they are true bartenders that is. ;)

Are you talking about the Walmart version of crystal lite packets? I have never seen those flavors if that's what you mean. If it isn't them, can you explain what they are and where do you find them?

I drink budwiser 55........only 55 calories per beer......me loves them! I have not found anything I can not drink! On that note, it's happy hour time and a vodka with peach snapple (0) cal is in order! Peace out and party on!

Redbull is carbonated as well.

I personally have issues with carbonation, occasionally and I mean very occasionally can I handle a sip. It puts an extreme amount of pressure in my stomach and makes me honestly feel stuck. I loved a Red Stripe or Bud Ice before the band. It has been a year and a half now and I have yet to finish one whole beer. I am not a wine drinker unless they are sweeter and although carbonated, they are bit less than beers. I also let mine sit for a while, it bothers me less--warm.

I will also drink, gin or vodka mixed with cranberry or OJ or whiskey/amaretto/ midori sours. Ever since banding, alcohol is harder for me to consume for some reason..good thing I am not missing out. Before I could handle at least a few with friends......I have not been drunk or barely tipsy since banding, so one drink can make me fuzzy or not.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
