LapBand with Hiatal hernia repair, getting harder to breath

Recommended Posts

Hi - I had my lapband surgery with a hiatal hernia repair on 6/29. Have been fairly uncomfortable but getting better everyday until last night. I am seeing my asthma doctor this afternoon since we had a long weekend holiday. It seems like my asthma and chest tightening are getting increasingly worse. I am talking all my meds required along with pain meds, drinking fluids, resting but seems to be getting harder to breath. I can hear deep wheezing if I take a deep breath otherwise - I don't hear it like I would before surgery. I was thinking it is just a usual condition for a severe asthmatic post any surgery. This is my first surgery of any kind. I was given on of those Airlife breathing exercise things to breath from to check my lungs and before surgery I could get the darn thing maxed out easily, now I can barely get it over the half way point. I am scared I have a collapsed lung or walking Pneumonia or something like that. Anyone have anything like this happen after thier surgery? Thank you.

Please call your doctor. It certainly could be pneumonia.

Definitely...call your surgeon's office. According the the lapband literature, this is one symptom that needs to be addressed immediately (just read it today).

Went to my asthma doc this afternoon. Yes, I am wheezing but I am ok. No pneunonia or brochitis. Normal temp, normal blood pressure, oxygen level is 98. Since stress can be the biggest trigger of asthma - this is what my body is doing. I already take a ton of medications so if I didn't I'd be way worse. My doc added Xanax to my list of meds to help me relax. I will need to stay home and relax til at least the 15th of the month. I see my surgeon thursday and recheck with my asthma doc after that before I can go back to work. So basically this ordeal has stressed me out mentally and physically and my body is reacting to it all. OK. I am ok. Slow down and relax. I went for a short visit to the beach and took in some fresh ocean air and felt the sand between my toes. Always makes me happy. Thank you for your responses.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
