I'm having trouble with the liquid diet too. Just can't find something that really tastes ok. I'm getting lightheaded and already a little emotional after one day. Plus the added stress if you don't lose weight and your liver doesn't shrink my doctor will cancel the surgery after he gets in there and sees that the liver is large. WOW!

Hope you are finding some liquids you like.

Chat soon.

I started my pre-op diet on Monday and was doing good, then I had a bit of trouble last night and eat something I shouldn't have because I let myself get to hungry. But I learned my lesson and I'm right back on it today!

We will make it through our pre-op diets!! Just keep trying  Just keep telling yourself you can do anything for two weeks!! (Got that from someone else here) It helps me.

I'm on day 4 of the pre-op liquid diet. Ughhh!! Can't wait till this is over. I have to do it for 2 weeks. My surgery date is August 16.

Here is a stupid question. Why is it important to shrink the liver ?

Good luck to all August Bandsters !!

I did it! I can't jump up and down and Celebrate but I'm happy its over. Yesterday was pretty bad for me, especially because I didn't expect to be so groggy. The anesthesia made me feel like I was on drugs..........ok I was but you get my point. Today is much better. I declined meds because I wasn't in pain as much as I was in discomfort. I will be blogging about my experience in details so follow me to check in on my journey.

Hi! I'm August 17th too. My Surgery is in West Chester, OH. I started the liquid diet, what about you? My head has been hurting off and on. I just can't seem to find something to eat that tastes ok. My dr. wants me to have 800 calories and 60 gr. of Protein, I just can't do those liquid Protein Drinks. I was hoping I could do the chocolate stuff since I love chocolate but I guess I'm a true chocolate lover because that stuff just don't cut it. I guess I've cheated because I've resorted to chicken broth with Protein Powder. I know we are doing this to shrink our livers so I'm not sure if just losing fast weight will do it or what. I understand they want you to get protein but right now I'm focusing on the calories until I can find something. How about you?

Hey, I'm right with you. Day II. Suregery 8/17. From what I've been told and read the liver is very large and they need it to shrink so the Surgeon has a better work area, so it isn't covering up the stomach. My surgeon's office said they want you to lose 10 lbs. Well, I asked is it the 10 lbs. or shrinking my liver, like are they gonna weigh me on surgery day and say canceled if I didn't lose 10 lbs. They said no. The dr. will begin the surgery but if he determines that the liver is too large then he will stop. YIKES!

I just can't find a shake that doesn't leave some nasty after taste. I have a bunch of recipes that my dr. gave me. I had to resort to chicken broth and even Lipton pkg. of Tomato Soup. I was really feeling sick. My head has been hurting off and on. I have been drinking Propel/Crystal Light too. I have experimented with some vanilla powder with frozen strawberries or banana, not too bad. Let me know how you are doing.

I have my sleep study tonight. Wonder how that will go since I'll be hungry too!

This is what my pre-op diet information packet says regarding liver-shrinking:

"In the obese, the liver is a huge, fatty organ. It is "in the way" of the surgical area during surgery, and must be held back with surgical instruments. An enlarged liver is very fragile and bleeds quite easily when touched or manipulated during surgery. This bleeding can be difficult to control, and the extra care required with an enlarged liver increases surgical risk, as well as surgical time. Longer surgical time and extended time under general anesthesia can make both immediate and longer-term recovery much more difficult for you."

I wouldn't want to potentially increase the risks during surgery. I'm sure it also jump-starts your weight loss. The liquid diet in particular gets you prepared for the post-op diet too!

@RegFern: My ex-boyfriend lives in West Chester, OH lol. I don't know what I find that amusing . I looked at your patient profile and saw that you're from Hamilton. I went to Miami University!

Kala, Thats cool. I actually grew up in Millville and we live in Ross. My husband went to Miami too. How's it going? Did you see that I found 200 shake recipes on the Food/Exercise forum. Not sure about calories or Protein so I'll have to use my best judgement. Did you have a favorite liquid diet item?

You're welcome. I think any weight loss should help shrink the liver. I'm on the Atkins diet to put my body in a temporary ketosis to shrink my liver. I guess every surgeon is different in their post and pre diets/care. The liquid diet is probably better because you'll lose more weight.

I actually just graduated Miami this past May B). I will have to look at that shake recipe post. I'm not on a liquid pre-op diet- my doctor put on on Atkins. But, I do need to get in my liquids (especially after the surgery), so that list will definitely come in handy. I'll be on liquids/mushies for 30 days after my surgery!

I'm getting mine done in florence, KY on the 17th. I start my liquid diet on Sunday. I just went out and bought all of my stuff, I still need to get protein powder, I think I'm going to try Isopure, I have to get 75gr of protein each day. I feel like the liquid diet is going to be the hardest part lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
