Dear Lindie,

I too am a Tricare Ins. person. I have already talked with numerous supervisors at Tricare to see if they cover the Lap-Band procedure. I'm sorry to say, but at this time the answer is "NO". They just started to cover gastric bypass done laprascopically, and I think it it will take them a while to authorize the Lap-Band too. Don't give up. If enough of us want it, hopefully they'll come around. I'm trying to schedule my surgery with Dr. Rodrigues in Monterrey, Mexico. I live in the K.C. area. Contact me anytime.

Hello Billie,

I live in Mission, KS. I am thinking of having surgery with Dr. Rodrigues in Monterrey, Mexico. My insurance Tricare denied me Lap-Band request, so I am scraping up the needed cash for Mexico. I hope you have more success than me. I personally know what it is like to be the fat girl in grade school. In the sixth grade I weighed 120lbs.. Keep fighting for your daughter.

Hey Everyone-

My name is Courtney and I live by Harrisonville, Mo. I am going to go to Dr. Malley in Lenexa, Kansas. I went to his free orientation and got a lot of my questions answered. The orientation was very informative. Billiebranham, I too have been heavy for quite some time, probably since I was around the age of nine. I am 20 years old now. Tell your daughter that I know how she feels and that I am cheering her on and that I am am always available to talk.

Hey Courtney

Let us know what Dr. Malley is like etc after your surgery is done - -I went to Mexico for my surgery 3-4-05, but Dr. Malleys office said they would do my follow up care if needed and fills if needed, but haven't need to go yet. Hope everything goes great for you!!

Hi, Missourians!

It's so nice to know you're out there! I began my journey in early January and kept being directed to the "New Start Program" in St. Louis, MO. I attended a seminar with Dr. Wagner and began the task of filling out all the necessary paper work. Wow! This was a new experience for me! I'm just so used to phoning a doctor for an appointment whenever I need to. I wasn't set up with an appointment with Dr. Wagner until early March--after prelim insurance approval, psycological eval, physician's recommendation, next stag of insurance approval--but then things shifted into high gear. It took maybe a week to get the final approval and then my surgery date was set and prelim tests set up. New Start set up all appointments, etc. I lost about ten lbs. on the liquid diet before surgery and have lost ten more since my March 24th surgery. I will have my first fill in early May. I have progressed to solid foods a few days ago but find myself still choosing Soups and oatmeal. I find that I'm now to the point where I need to start recording my food in-take. I still have yet to feel that "full feeling" after six bites but I'm hoping I will after the fill. Best of luck to all!

I have been reading this thread and was wondering if anyone could give me a current number for Dr. Malley. I tried the one for the headacheandpain center today and they said he is no longer there. Trying to find an after care and fill dr. I was told today the Dr. Sandhu in Coffeyville, Ks is no longer taking any new fill patients. I am within a few hours of Kansas City, Wichita, Tulsa. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanx.

I have just recently started seriously looking into surgery. I am in the KC area and am wondering around aimlessly in the web looking for any and all info...good or bad about the band. I appriciate any and all info. I will have to pay for this myself because BCBS is not going to even think about paying, so I want to know what I am getting into.

Hi, I live in the St. Charles, MO area and am wondering if there are any banders in this area or in West St. Louis County who would like to get together and meet. I had my first fill last Monday, 5/2 and would love to meet other folks in the area.

Hi! You said in your first post that you ar not filling full but that you were hoping that after your first fill that you would. Now in your new post I see that you have had your fill. My question is are you filling full? My next question is did the fill hurt ar did you have discomfort at all?

Thanks, Courtney

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
