I tell you what !!!!! You better hope you weren't banded and swallowed that gum. Or you would be going in for surgery,, all over again.

Were not allowed to chew gum where I had my surgery at, all, he explained why. How would you get it up if it went down??

Give it a thought,,,, do yourself a favor and give up the GUM.

Wow! I didn't know we couldn't chew gum so thanks for telling us that. I guess they would tell me that after surgery., but hearing why really drives it home. Ms. Texas Good Luck with your surgery. I also have surgery in the morning. Mine is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Hope to see you around on the boards.

Hi guys! I am strongly thinking about getting banded. I am in Houston too and have researched docs there. I am leaning towards Dr. Reily with True Results. Any suggestions or comments? How long does it take to schedule surgery. My insurance won't cover it, so I will be paying out of pocket. Good luck to all of you!!!!

No one told me about the gum at all. The bad thing is I chew a pack a day.

It will be a hard habit to break but I will have to.

Dr. Hollis at TrueResults.

I started about 6 weeks ago.

I am paying for it myself as well.

My BMI is 35 and I only had one issue:sleep apnea, so the insurance would not cover it.

So $10k was spent last week and I am excited about tomorrow. Scared but ready.

The one thing I have notised is they are SUPER busy or understaffed so be prepared to wait....not just 30 mins but 1.5 to 2 hours per appointment.

Good Luck!

Weesie-Good Luck in the AM and for the entire journey afterwards!!!!

Prayer-Texas xXx

I have the no gum rule as well. My surgeon says you may have never swallowed a piece, but as soon as your are banded, you will!

I've never been a big gum chewer anyway, so no biggie to me.

Wow. i never heard about the no gum thing either. I'm glad I read it here before trying it after being banded. I really wish there was a central place all the information was posted on that surgeons agreed upon. it's so different from surgeon to surgeon.

Now that i think of it, I'd Hate to swallow gum while banded!

These boards are damn helpful.

My doctor kind of laughs at the gum myth. He has even offered me some gum before while we were chatting at a conference.

As for swallowing it and needing surgery. I think that can sometimes be untrue. I swallowed my gum a few months ago when I was a little overfilled. I saw my doctor two days later and nothing was wrong. I happened to have a endoscope check 2 weeks later and the gum wasnt there.

So I survived swallowing gum and didn't need surgery or anything. I even told my doctor what I had done and he never told me to stop gum chewing. I think i'd die if I wasn't allowed it.

Has this actually ever happened to anyone? Or is it just something some doctors tell us ( like no caffine or carbonated drinks etc)

Mine told us that there has been many times that it goes down, and they end up in the E.R., and he tells them "It better not be Gum.. When he gets in there, it's Gum.

So for what it's worth. I don't dare touch it.

As far as carbonated drinks,,,, I forgot myself one hot summed day, and had a cold bottle of Root Beer. NEVER AGAIN ! All that carbination , it felt like a war was going on inside me.

So I don't touch it.

If you do? It truly shows that everyone is different.

My surgeon posted on his website that they aren't sure about carbonation.

My take on it, the digestive tract is not a closed system, so it does have somewhere to go. I have it from time to time. It can give me the hiccups. Diet drinks can increase appetite due to the chemicals in them. Non-diet drinks have calories that need to be taken into account in your meal planning.

I would like to hear a story from someone who has actually had gum stuck though.

My doctor has never had a banded patient have problems with gum... yet

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
