My doctor says only 1 week of protein shakes after...

Recommended Posts

When I was reading over my notebook that I got from my Pre-op Surgery Class, it says that I will only be on liquids for the first week after surgery and then to limited mushies for the second week and then soft foods on the 3rd week and then regular foods starting the 4th week. Does that sound right?

I have been reading other posts and websites and it seems like a lot of people are doing shakes for the 1st three weeks and dont get to solids until week 6.

Do you think it is more beneficial loss wise to do the shakes for longer? I wont get a fill until week 6. Will I be able to lose doing it my doctor's way?

my dr's plan is exactly like yours. i thought about staying on the liquid diet for another week so i could lose more but by the end of that week, i was dying to start on food. if after a week you think you could do liquids longer, ask your dr. i kind of wish i could have done it longer.

Follow your doctor's recommendations, not your own and not someone else's. Also be aware that the weight lost during the liquid phase is generally water-weight, not true fat loss. If anything you're dropping Water + some muscle mass.

I know it works because a lady I know has lost 75 pounds in the last year that had the surgery through the same doctor. I should speak with her to see how she did in the first couple of weeks.

Sometimes these forums are so confusing when you get so many people doing so many different things. ;)

my diet was just like your's also... I lost 28 pounds that first month. Different doctors have different standards but truth be told.... we all lose differently.

I wish I only had a week of Protein shakes! I'm at day 5 post-op. I started liquids 2 days prior to surgery. broth, Protein shakes, Water and juice. Since my surgery day my scale has dropped 13 lbs. I'm getting enough Water for sure, followed by Protein, then whatever is in the juice and broth. My hunger issues hit in the evening when my kids and family start eating (with me mostly preparing the meals). I have not cheated though. Too afraid of the consequances lol. In all I'm to follow this diet for 2 weeks before I can go to mush....

I'm not so sure how much of a benefit it is for me to follow this water, broth, juice, protein (2 oz each over an hour and repeat), but mentally it's draining. My thoughts are all over, my skin is super dry, and I'm really moody and exhausted. Im afraid at this rate I'll have a heart attack or something..

I'm following the orders of my doc to the T. One week + 2 days to go and I can try the next step.

I agree with others and do what your dr suggests. Mine is completely different and I'm going a little crazy. I have to do all liquids for 3 weeks. I had the lap band with gastric plication on 3-24. So I'm just one week into this. Like bzbrown I have to do the 2oz. each of Protein and a hydrating liquid every 15 mins. during my waking hours. With the protein being at the top of the hour.

If I said it wasn't hard for me, I'd be lying. I'm hungry! I'm irritable! I want to eat food! But I'm praying and staying strong and using all the will power I have to make this work. I want it to work! Others who have been down this road tell me the first month is hard... but afterward the results will be well worth it :)

Stay strong everyone!

I had to do liquids for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery. Mushies were for 2 weeks and then to solids.

Every doctor is different, but you need to follow the plan he gave you. Don't worry about what the person next door is doing. Just follow his plan and you will be fine. If you have a question, be sure and call his office. They will tell you what you need to know.

Good Luck!

There are hundreds of posts on this site about food stages, and you're going to find at least a dozen different progressions. Different doctors have different ways, and some give different food progressions to different patients based on what they feel the patient will do best with. My advice is to follow whatever plan your doctor gives you. Whatever the plan is, he's got his reasons for prescribing it to you.

I only had a week of all liquids/shakes.....that was plenty as I was starving and needed something more. Course that is all part of the bandster hell --- more than likely you WILL struggle with being hungry and not feeling full until you get some fills and start feeling restriction.....just hang in there!

I still have a Protein Shake for Breakfast every morning - as I am way too tight in the mornings to try and eat anything...and this way I can get some Protein in first thing. I make a herbalife shake and add a scoop of unflavored Unjury (20 g protein) to it --- by making the shake with 6 oz skim milk and some ice it gets thick like an ice cream shake and is a real treat! So it is a healthy breakfast - YUM!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
