Recommended Posts

My hair is starting to shed on the right side and I know it's all because I abandoned drinking Protein. I am currently drinking Premier Nutrition and I HATE IT...Since I don't want my hair to continue to fall out and I know I need to drink this stuff Does anybody have any alternatives that they happen to stomach each and every day. THANKS. DESPERATE AND GOING BALD!!

Not a problem at all !!!!! If you have ever heard of MUSCLE MILK, you would probably here ugggh !

Well I am here to tell you that if you by MUSCLE MILK by the flavor that you want, and in powder form. "NOT IN A liquid, OR TIN CAN." You will be a lot happier. :D

Go to ebay, and type in Muscle Milk "I buy the lite" You will see alot of different suppliers on there, and they have a lot to choose from.

I buy Cookies N CREAM, chocolate Peanut Butter, strawberry CREAM, vanilla CREAM. There are more to choose from trust me.

I didn't care for chocolate, CREAM BRUILEE,AND BLUEBERRYS N CREAM

You will also see people at great prices because the expiration date is coming up. There still good.. I buy all my stuff on ebay, I wouldn't even think about the junk in a Health food store. Take a look, you won't be disappointed especially when you find someone with 13, or more flavors.

I was banded in 2006 at Henry Ford Hospital. They even tell there patients to use MUSCLE MILK, as well as a good multiple Vitamin. FLINTSTONES COMPLETE WITH CHOLINE. This stuff will give you a boost ! i do about 4 a day

I'm on my iPhone so I can't see your signature to know en you were banded.. Can you eat more regular Protein? More Beans or eggs?

I've also heard that Biotin helps with Hair loss but I don't know if that is true.

Has your doctor recommended anything?

Sorry to tell you but usually once your hair is falling out, it'll continue to do so. You won't go bald but surgery, anesthesia, and weight-loss all interrupt the hair cycle. I have pretty thick hair and a lot of it fell out. It started about 3 months in and stopped about a month or so back.

You can take Biotin and use strengthening/Biotin shampoos though they are usually not a huge help. Once your hair is falling out it's usually also in the process of growing back.

I was/am currently getting 120g+ of Protein a day; it didn't keep my hair from falling out.

At 4 months... I was ready to cry, my hair was falling out by the hand full ( or so it seemed) Talked to my Dr. at a fill apt. She said, it's all part of the surgery, anethisia, weight loss. She actually told me it isn't fallin out, it is breaking off. (not that that made me feel better???) Anyway, I am amost 8 months out and it has subsided. I never did try the Biotin. Good Luck!

Sigh. My hair started to fall out about 4 months after surgery. My PCP did a second thyroid test this week and the test came back "normal". I am going to meet with the Nurse Practioner tomorrow to discuss what other reasons could be causing this. They site "rapid" weight loss but my surgeon's office does not consider my loss "rapid" at all. Sugery was 8/13 I am down 34 pounds which sure I am happy about. I am however frustrated when I read that others are down 50; when I religiously follow my doctors foods orders and excercise for an hour daily (7 days a week).

I eat Greek yogurt, it has a lot of Protein and not a lot of calories. My hair fell out for months after surgery in handfulls. I increased protein and has some response, but it was only when I went back to taking fish oil supplements that I had any substantial regrowth. Unfortunately it continued to fall out but was growing back quickly. I recently had some patch testing and learned I am allergic to a chemical in my Shampoo and conditioner. I switched to a "natural" hair care line (Burts Bees) and voila, no more Hair loss. You should explore other possibilities. There could be any number of other causes that are exacerbated by the weight loss and surgical stress. Have your thyroid checked, your Vit D levels (a common problem for women), and consider patch testing for allergies that could cause the problem.

I use Unjury Protein Powder. I really like the chocolate splendor and the vanilla flavors, and the chicken Soup flavor really does taste just like chicken soup! Best of all is their unflavored powder. I mix it into almost everything - scrambled eggs, oatmeal, mashed sweet potatoes, and even into yogurt to increase the Protein content. It has no taste whatsoever.

I love just eating a good portion of chicken or solid Protein, or eggs at each meal. I don't need to supplement with Liquid Protein. My new fav is turkey meatballs, 21g for about 4oz (which is 4 meatballs), or even Egg Beaters, 1/4 cup is 6g of protein, I usually do a 1/2 cup.

How much do you add of the Unfavored protein mix to yougart? I tried mixing it in my cottage cheese but I literally had to choke it down. Somehow I did taste it even though it was unfavored! I may have added too much....

I had a different type of surgery just about a year before my lap band surgery, and about 2-3 months later I started losing hair. This time, same pattern. So from my experience, it is more the shock of surgery than the Protein. It passed after some time. Protein definitely wouldn't hurt you, though! I heard the SEI Pharmaceuticals Max Protein is great.

I add about a half scoop to a yogurt and a full level scoop to my oatmeal. I also add a packet of splenda to both. I honestly don't taste the Protein Powder.

Protein won't prevent your hair from falling out. The damage is already done. Your hair grows in three phases, and at any given time 10-15% of your hair is dead and falling out, which is 50-100 strands per day. This phase lasts for 3 months. When you induce trauma (surgery) you can also cause your hair to fast forward through a phase. Take Biotin every day (sublingual), make sure you're taking your B Vitamins, and a Multivitamin.

The ANAGEN Phase

This is the first phase of your Hair growth cycle which is also known as the growing phase. At any one time, 80 - 90 percent of your hair follicles on your scalp are in the ANAGEN phase. During this period

hair_anagen.jpg

  • Your hair grows continuously
  • The growing will continue for 3 to 7 years
  • Grows at the rate of half an inch a month
  • The hair bulb produces your hair pigment
  • Blood supply provides nutrients and minerals to your hair
  • Looks thick and nourished

The CATAGEN Phase

After the ANAGEN phase, your hair will turn into a transitional phase before going to rest. This short phase is known as the CATAGEN phase which last for 2 to 4 weeks. During this time,

hair_catagen.jpg

  • Your hair detaches from the blood supply
  • The detached follicle will slowly shrink to about 1/6 its size
  • The hair bulb stops producing the color pigment
  • The bulb will be pushed upwards towards the surface when the new hair is formed
  • Approximately 2 - 3 % of your hair will be in this phase in your scalp

The TELOGEN Phase

This is the final phase of your hair growth cycle. It is also known as the resting phase where your hair follicles will slowly fall off and replaced by a new hair.

hair_telogen.jpg

  • Around 10 - 15 % of the hair in your scalp will be in TELOGEN phase
  • 50 - 100 hairs from this phase will shed daily
  • This period lasts for 3 months before the hair falls out
  • The hair follicles become weak and thin and you can easily pull them out - new hair follicle will emerge once the hair the hair falls.

I agree that I dont think Protein will help for Hair loss, but, you still need to get your protein in. The ONLY stuff I can handle is the pre-made (NOT POWDER) Premier Protein shakes in chocolate. I often drink them as my Breakfast - so I add about 3-4 ounces of coffee and ice (you can add one packet of sweet and low if you like your coffee sweeter), it taste just like a mocha drink and only has 1 gram of sugar and 30 grams of protein. It really helps me get my protein in every day. I have tried powders and other shakes and havent been able to stomach anything else.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
