March 2011 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hang in there...I am 8 days post op and finally feeling close to normal. Some days have been harder than others. Yesterday I was having mini breakdowns because I felt like I wasn't getting any nutrition..every time I ate I got a headache and nauseated. Today everything was much better. I guess what I'm saying is that it does get better... just give yourself time to heal and adjust to everything. Also it was really hard for me to tell people I was going to get banded but to my amazement I have gotten an amazing amount of support. Thank goodness for this forum where we can share and not feel like we have to go through this journey alone :)

I am still having problems adjusting. Feeling very anxious like I will never be able to eat again. Also feeling like it was pretty drastic. I don't know anyone else who has ever done this and only my husband knows what I did. I wish I had something to compare it to. There is a support group on the 28th so I am going to try very hard to make that. Just wish it was sooner. It helps to read that other people were anxious too here on the boards.

I didnt start feeling good till yesterday....9 days post op... I finally stopped having pain in my shoulder and my port incision only hurts when i use my stomach muscles...Like opening a heavy door and lifting in and out of bed ( i have a really tall bed)

Are you feeling better? I am about 48 hours out from surgery and not doing well. It hurts to yawn! When does it start to get better?

I'm finding myself having a hard time deciding WHAT to eat....because I don't really want the crap I'm allowed -- I'd kill for Taco Time right now. But, I know I can get thru this. I think it's normal to feel anxiety.

I had only told some people at work, Dh and my in-laws assumign my family would not be supportive....but told them a week before surgery and WOW they are all great! I'm glad I was open about it.

I am a bit worried that my surgery will be postponed because im just getting over the end of a cold and worried that it wont be gone by tuesday. Im also concerned about recovery time i know its usually not long but i have like four university assignments due in the week following my surgery. but im hoping and hoping all goes well and im better by then.

Laura, my surgery was just on Tuesday. I've had bronchitis for about 5 weeks. I was so worried surgery would be canceled that i took a dose of prescription cough Syrup the morning of....shame on me!! Anyway the anesthesiologist had to suction my lungs during surgery and was sure tot ell me it was pretty bad. The biggest worry, I think, is coughing post op, I think it can cause slippage. o be sure to be honest with them....hugs and good luck!

(by the way, I am a terrible patient)

yea im kinda over the worst of it, its just that flem at the back of my throught that just wont go away and coughing to get rid of it, other then that i feel fine. but i will tell my doc on tuesday if its still there and will put the surgery on hold for maybe a week till it clears if i have too. yea my mum said she will not let me go ahead with the surgery if its not gone just cos it could open up a big can of worms. Ijust hope it goes away I will be soooo bumbed if i have to put it off. This pre op diet is driving me crazy. having to do it for another week will turn me insane. lol

I was banded on the 16th. I carry the majority of my weight in my stomach. I have been trying a bit here and there to feel for the port but I am not sure I am finding anything. Has anyone else experienced this or know if that is normal until some weight is lost, and perhaps more healing has taken place and I do not have to touch so lightly?

Lay on your back and stretch out,...that's how I finally figured out where mine was.

I have lowfat cottage cheese, one egg, 2 oz tuna sugar free pudding, low fat cheese sticks.

Just had my 2 week post op app. today, doc said everything looks good and I can go on " mushy" foods, I though was going to be awesome , you know, after being on liquids for 2 weeks, but to my surprise, I can't figure it out what to eat, I tried soft tacos with a bean, chicken and salsa mixture (all blended, the nurse told me , was good) and … Big MISTAKE!!!!Even though I chew it a lot… the soft taco is WAY to thick!

I felt stuck, it was weird!!! And I don't even have any liquid in my band!!! blink.gif, but I guess my doc is right (surprise, hehehe), I'll learn as I go!!!

I'm also scared of eating and gaining the weight that I lost back!!! What do I do!!!?? haaaaaaaa huh.gif

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
