How do you feel about drinking water to lose weight?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

The importance of Water for weight loss was never part of what my nutritionist said. She told me to be sure I avoid dehydration, but never mentioned that the amount of water I drink can impact the rate of weight loss. I have read several threads where people mention "if I don't drink enough water, I don't lose weight". Do you find this to be true? If so, how much do you drink? I want to try anything to get over this plateau I'm in!! Thanks for any input.

I aim for 64oz a day as well. Water is a must have in weightloss.

For me, Water is key. I believe, however mistaken I may be, that the more I drink the more fat gets flushed away. I generally drink 70-80 oz a day.

I usually drink 96 oz or more a day. Prior to surgery my average was at least 128 oz a day or more. I find if I have head hunger I can drink and a lot of times it will go away. Though I was told on one of my blood tests a number of months ago my sodium was low and I was like probably from all the water( well wyers flavored) I drink

I dont find it to be true.

Water intake has never affected my rate of weight loss, but Water is important for general health. Fat cannot be "flushed away', it has be comverted and used for energy. They byproducts of this process can be flushed away, but overhydrating beyond what your body needs isnt of any particular health value. You jsut pee it out, and that's all that'[s happening when you drink gallons of water. 2L a day is plenty for the average adult.

But is cheap and nboody is likely to serioulsy drink too much, so if it has a positive impact on YOUR weight loss, follow your own body's leads.

My Fluid and Water intake has not affected my weightloss in any obvious way; it doesn't take away hunger for me, and actually makes me a bit naseous if I drink much when I'm hungry. I was never very good about drinking until I started exercising more last summer, at which point I'd already exceeded my weight loss goal. Now I drink about a gallon a day to stay hydrated; with more activity, I have to drink a lot or my band tightens up and it's harder to eat.

I don't drink as much Water as most everyone else and have not found that it stopped or slowed my weightloss. I have not had a problem with dehydration.

Wasn't there some sort of report a couple years ago that said the 64oz. rule was wrong and the body does not really need that much? Either way, I don't drink 64oz every day. It sure wouldn't be a bad idea to try increasing water intake to get over a frustrating stall in weightloss.

I do drink at least 64 fl oz of Water a day and I find it does have an impact on my weight loss, although I doubt it's because it 'flushes away the fat'. I did a fitness program years ago and the explanation for why drinking Water helps in weight loss is because the organs need that water to work efficiently. When they don't have enough water, they have to work harder and still won't do their job efficiently and we get fatigued. The question though is 'what's enough'? It most likely varies with the person so the 64 fl oz per day is just a general guideline. Some people need more. Some less.

I'd just pay attention to your body. If you're tired or having difficulty losing weight and you're doing everything else right, up your water intake and see what happens.

For me I drink 8 glasses of a Water a day minimum. I have high blood pressure and Fluid retention and the more Water I drink the less water I retain.

Same here. The most important reason for me is tp prevent Constipation

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
