Emotional wreck...

Hey guys... I'm about 5 days preop and have been an emotional wreck lately. I know it's misguided feelings and nervousness about surgery. I've never had surgery, been put under, been on prescription pain meds, etc. So I'm pretty nervous about that but also part of me is scared I may fail at this too. I'm a positive person but my failed attempts at weight loss all my life have me questioning myself. I've been questioning if I can really do this, questioning how my husband will deal with these changes, etc. I started a huge fight with him over something simple on Friday. I apologized later and explained that I'm having a hard time dealing with all the different emotions about surgery. He seemed to understand and said that's what he is here for. Am i alone in thinking this way?

Not alone at all!

I get banded Jan 10th and am very excited to be making this decision but mad at myself for letting me get to this point.

I am a single mom of 2 young kids so the life style change will be easier I think as I don't have to prepare for a spouse.

I am nervous about being on my own through this journey but excited too!

I think its the unknown, but with positive thinking that we will do this and it is the decision that will change ours and our family's life we will do it!

Stay in touch and we can get through it together.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

It is very normal to be emotional and worried about surgery and about the big changes that will come.

I know it's easier said than done, but try to focus on the positive. Your husband seems very nice to say that is what he is there for. Focus on his good traits and how much you love him. The great thing about surgery is that one minute they knock you out and the next minute you wake up and it's done. Keep your eye on the prize. Think about how great you will look and feel one year from now.

Swan,

Are you on a pre-op diet? Sometimes the low calories can get you on a bit of a roller coaster. The surgery is going to be fine. In and out before you know it. Let yourself have your feelings though - it is really important to be patient with yourself but to also recognize that this is a relatively simple procedure. You will be fine. You can do this! I'm Day 12 post op and feeling great.

Swan, I too had never had surgery or put under. After I was fully awake I too felt like "wow, what did I just do", "was this the right choice". I think is common for everyone to think these things. One of the reasons most choose WLS is because we have failed at 'dieting', this was the last resort for me. I'm 4 weeks postOP, so my mind has been swirling with all I read here on the forums. I'm getting my mind ready for my first fill in 11 days!

Keep your chin up and take care of yourself.

First of all you are not alone in your journey.. People are always here for you. They are just a computer away.. You will be able to build several relationships with individuals who understand exactly what you are doing. Just remember that you are doing this to be healthy!!

I am on a four week preop diet. I am able to have Protein shakes for Breakfast and lunch and a low carb dinner. I haven't been the best but I am trying really hard.. It sucks since I am at work during all this and everyone wants to bring you candy and crap..

Thank you all so much for your encouragment and letting me know I'm not alone in my crazy, emotional, scared talk... lol. I really appreciate it. I am very focused on why I am doing this and am so thankful that I have a spouse that is so dedicated to helping me suceed. I know for the most part he will change his eating to eat like me. I know a lot of people don't have a support system like that. We have been through a lot together and will make it though my crazy moods now too...

CheckYes - I am on a preop diet. Have been since Dec 13th. This weak is just protien shakes, Jello, popsicles, and broth. Last week I could have one small meal (one lean protien and 1/2 cup veggies). This week has been harder but I've done really good.

I'm down a total of 28 pounds from my heaviest, about 6 this past week though. I think I'm making good headway.

Thank you again for all the support! I REALLY appreciate it!

Merry Christmas everyone

OMG i SO know how you are feeling. I'm having HELLA mood swings! I had a melt down a couple days ago thinking, why and how did i let myself get to this point?! How did i eat myself into this misery i currently live in.

I went to the grocery store tonight to get some things for my WW plan im on until my surgery pre op diet starts and walking around the store for the time i was there killed me. I had to waddle to the car to sit down because there was no benches or anything around the store for me to sit down on. Its a miserable feeling when you cant even grocery shop anymore because being on your feet too long gives you back cramps and legs get tired...then your arms get tired from holding yourself up on the cart. Misery. One word for it.

And im very scared about being put out. Ive been put out a million times for other procedures but im scared for this one.

Merry Christmas to you, you will do fine!! Grats!

i love your post because i posted almost the exact same thing a few minutes ago. but from a professional side i hope i can help shed some light on some of your fears. i am a pre-operative, recovery and intensive care rn. your surgery will only be about 40 min. it takes longer to get you on the operating table, put you to sleep and wake you up than it does to do the procedure. when you wake up you will probably not have any idea where you are and you will be so surprised that it is all over. don't be surprised if you are really tired and possibly a little nauseated. some people have no trouble with the nausea. pain meds are no big deal. there is very little risk of becoming "addicted". make sure to take them with something in your stomach such as juice because they can make you sick. the biggest side effect of pain meds is Constipation, and the best thing for that is walking and Water. walking will also help your breathing /lungs after surgery, help to stretch the muscles in your stomach, prevent blood clots, and help elevate your mood. so walk!

I have previously lost 70 lbs and i struggled with it emotionally. i found myself almost mourning the loss. i did not know how to deal with my new body. i mourned that my clothes no longer fit. i didn't know how to handle guys checking me out in the gym. i had always thought i would be fat, so the concept of me being a hottie was hard to accept or deal with. i will say this though, it gets better. i got used to the idea of it. i loved being able to go into any store and try on anything! i didn't have to look for the biggest size and pray that i could get it up over my fat thighs.

i'm sure your husband is a little scared as well. how will you change? will he lose what he loves about you?

i wish you the very best! trust me, i'm freaking out as well to be banded jan 7.

Bowe I love that you just described that for her and everyone to see how you might feel after surgery. That was awesome!!!Thank you.

Swan , This is such and emotional time. I know we are all struggling in our own ways, and I am thanking God we have each other here.

This is going to be such a great healthy change for all of us. Our self esteem will be much better.

This is so exciting, but will undoubtly have ups and downs.

Hang in there!!! Can;t wait to hear how it all goes for you. I get banded Jan 19 and I am sure I will be feeling like you in a few weeks, but by that time you can pep talk all of us with how easy it was... ;)

Hi I am really questioning it since this is one diet that they accually cut into or make wholes, Now days. I am 5 ft 2 inches, 239 and have lost wieght of 72 to 80 pounds more than I want to tell. I am a real yo yo dieter. started at 11 years old and not at almost 64 tired of most of my life as a fat obese person. I have done this so many times to loose and I have a husband that want the skinny person but not help with it. He has been my down fall and that is what I am worried about this time. Is this really me or is this his push?

I want to be healthier but don't want to hurt myself eather. I lost a friend to banding about a year ago. But did find out that she had done the stomack by pass for about 10 years. held her weight down and so had it re attached. after 5 years she ended up doing a lap band, I want to hear from people that have been banded for more than just 5 years or reasent bandings. Help me out hear please I am really scared at this time. I have conceltation with Dr. Ki Ho in Federalway, Washington January 3 rd. Am worried doing the wrong thing.

I feel the same way. If I have the surgery, I'm more afraid I won't be able to follow through with what I'm supposed to do and I would stay fat or lose the weight and get fat again..like all the other times. Surgery doesn't scare me. If you look at it like you would any other surgery..like I had my gallbladder removed, it was necessary. Ask yourself what will happen if you don't have this surgery. Is it something you want to do or is it something you need to do?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
