Anyone on antidepressants or moodstabilizers

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to see how people handle taking these types of medications. I know this is a very personal question and there may be some who do not want to share. I understand completely.

My curiosity is about how your stomach handles the medication. Are the pills difficult to swallow or mix with food? Do you still have the same kind of hunger as before? Some of my meds made me gain weight. Has anyone found it difficult to lose because of their meds?

I was on lexapro when I had my surgery 17 months ago, last 6 months switched back to Zoloft Neither made me gain weight, might slow it not sure but . . . have lost 83 lbs. Paxil made me gain weight 40 lbs in 3 months when I was on it, so you might want to switch if you take that. Wellbutrim helped lose small amount of weight but raised my blood pressure. Zoloft works best for me took it for about 5 years and then weaned off to see if I could make it with out it but 6 months later I was a mess could not even get out of bed. My husband had to take me to hospital I have a chemical inbalance and have to have my meds if I want to live. I did have to lower my dose after losing the weight it made me feel too drugged and now I do not even know I have a med in my body.

I've been on Lexapro since before surgery, and I haven't had any problems taking it. When I first started it I gained quite a bit of weight, but it hasn't impeded my weight loss. I used to take Paxil and Wellbutrin, too (both pre-band), and I actually lost weight on both of those.

I have been on Antidepressants for years. I have tried zoloft, prozac, wellbutrin, effexor and now Pristiq. Some of these caused weight gain, well probably most of them. The Effexor was probably the worst. I had other side effects from Effexor. Since being on Pristiq, which I know is just an updated version of effexor, a lot of the symtoms have gone away. So they must have somehow improved on the drug. The pills are small enough that there is no problem getting it down. I am on a fairly low dose, the lowest I've been on in years.

I am on Lamictal (mood stabilizer) and celexa and trazadone (antidepressants). None caused me to gain weight. My docs want us to crush all meds and the only difference I see is that the trazadone crushed makes me fall asleep much quicker.

Good luck.

I was banded a month or so ago and haven't had any problems with my pills. I take cymbalta and seroquel. The only change I made was other than swallowing them at once, I take them one at time and take a sip in between. Good luck!

I'm on wellbutrin and celexa, I take them as usual. I didn't gain weight from them prior to surgery and have been on them over 2 years. They are both small enough that I have not had any problems with them.

I take Wellbutrin and Geodon for bipolar. My doctor put me on these almost 4 years ago because I obviously already had a weight problem and they have the least weight gain effect. I was banded six months ago and I take them as prescribed with no problems. I have lost 86 pounds since surgery and have six pounds until goal, so they haven't stalled my weight loss.

I was on Lexapro before and after my surgery (5/19/10). I recently went up on my dose so I switched to Celexa, it's all good, I haven't had any issues with my band and any meds...

I have been on Lexapro for 3 years, and gained about 30 pounds within the first 6 months I was on it :( That tapered off then and now I have no problems with weight gain on it. My goal is to decrease the dose after taking off some of the weight and having my synthroid adjusted accordingly.

Ironically, I was at my follow up visit with the surgeon today and have lost exactly 30 pounds since the start of my two week pre op diet... take that medication weight gain! :D

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
