Port-- is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery about 6 days ago. I'm wondering if it's normal for the port site to have a "tingling" sensation ( that's the best way I can describe it). Also when I cough it hurts the port site so much. It almost feels like it's shifting or moving. It probably isn't ... I think... But is it normal to have this much discomfort with coughing? I can't wait to heal, it's been not great to this point. :(

My hubby and I had surgery one day apart back in 2008 and I remember him saying the same thing about his port tingling. It went away about 10 days post surgery. It wouldn't hurt to call the Dr. though - just in case. The pain started to go away about 10 days post-op as well. Hang in there.

Normal. Your port is sewn to your muscle; your muscle is getting used to it. Coughing, sneezing, laughing, etc. uses your stomach muscles, so you'll feel some discomfort where your port is for awhile.

I am two months out and still have the occasional pain and tingleing at the port site. My docs explanation is that there are nerves that run from your back to your stomach and kinda curve down toward your belly button. kinda the way our ribs are shaped. The port is usually placed between the nerves but the surgery can still cause irritation and it takes time for your body to heal and get used to it.

Ok, that does make a lot of sense as well. So great to get feedback from people who have been there, done that!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
