After the surgery....

Recommended Posts

Hi, I wondered if anyone had trouble moving around after the surgery? Did you need to rest a lot? I know that each one is going to be different. Just getting an idea of what I might expect. Thanks:unsure:

It was a very slow recovery for me for the fatigue part.

A shower would kick my butt and I would have to rest.

Each day got better, but the fatigue was much worse than the pain or discomfort.

I never knew a shower was an aerobic event! I thought I was the only one.

The first night I had trouble sitting up in bed after the pain meds wore off. Hubby got me more and helped me to sit up. After that night I was able to get around OK, I was sore and moved slow, but I could move under my own power. I was tired, too. I didn't do much the first week. Just did laps up and down the hall. After the first week, things got better and better every day.

Thanks to all that posted. I have a somewhat physical job and know that helps me now. I don't want to end up hurting myself tho!

The first week until the stitches were removed I had to keep reminding myself to stand up straight. The worst part was the port pain for me. I've had abdominal surgery before so I knew about post op pain. It took me several weeks to get over the fatigue. I did take two weeks off because I had the time..I really did not think that I needed the time...lol I was wrong..If I could do things differently, I would not have put so much pressure on myself. I was really hard on me.. I started pushing myself to walk at least 60 minutes /day as per Dr's orders and for me it was simply too much. I would have revised that exercise schedule and listened to my body. The good thing is the "ickiness" doesn't last forever. Take care of yourself.

I was in a lot of pain for at least a week after surgery. I felt pulling at my port area. I was zonked on pain pills for at least two weeks. I got back to work in 4 days and was very very slow for the first couple of days.

Altogether - I read a lot of stories where people were getting back to work almost immediately and had no pain at all - not with me. I was hurting badly for quite some time.

Just take it easy, man. It is a process.

If your job is very physical then take at least 10 days off.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
